Engaged to producer Cindy Gilmore in 1991, he married her on August 2, 1998. Gilmore filed for divorce on November 7, 2007. Model and television personality Jules Asner is his former daughter-in-law. Gavin Newsom, his ex-nephew-in-law, was a former mayor of San Francisco and is the current Lieutenant Governor of California.
On March 12, 2013, while performing in FDR at the Marquette Pavilion in Gary, Indiana, Asner began having trouble with his lines, and appeared to be disoriented, he was reportedly walked off stage by emergency medical personnel about 15 minutes into the performance. He was subsequently hospitalized in a Chicago-area hospital for exhaustion, and was released the following day. Commenting on his Twitter page Asner said, "Reports of my imminent demise are greatly exaggerated, They tell me I am suffering from exhaustion. Thanks for the good wishes!" He was expected to return to his home in Los Angeles, and postponed any further shows.

Biographie
Asner was married to Nancy Sykes from 1959 until 1988. Together they have three children: twins Matthew and Liza, and Kate. In 1987, he had a son named Charles with Carol Jean Vogelman. Asner is a parent and a grandparent of a child with autism and is deeply involved with the autism nonprofit Autism Speaks. The story centers around Johnny Graham (Edward Furlong), who was raised by the Torino crime family after his parents' death. He is constantly bothered by the fact that he has to decide whether he should remain loyal to his adoptive family or to his conscience. It is apparent to Johnny that it is time to act when Anthony Torino (Rick Ravanello) sets his sights on D.A. Elizabeth Jones (Grace Johnston), who is prosecuting Anthony for the gruesome murder of his cousin. Though Johnny is the family accountant, he is an excellent marksman, and he volunteers to make the hit. He persuades a hesitant Anthony to let him eliminate the D.A., when in actuality Johnny only wants to warn her. His plan is ruined by two men from the Torino family sent to oversee his first hit. The ensuing shootout leaves Elizabeth wounded, one of the two overseers dead, and Johnny arrested. Johnny's conscience takes control of him when he confesses and is entered into the Federal Witness Security Program. Shortly afterward, Anthony is apprehended, but he escapes and makes contact with a mole in an attempt to uncover the locations of Johnny and the others who were going to testify against him in trial. Torino family hit-man and Johnny's longtime friend, Vince, comes to the farm where Johnny is hidden. Once again, Johnny is scrambling to keep the lives of those who have crossed paths with Anthony intact, including his own. On his journey, he realizes he is not alone on his mission.

1957, en pleine guerre froide, James B. Donovan, un avocat américain, accepte de défendre Rudolf Abel (qui est en fait William Fischer se faisant passer pour lui, même si cela n'est pas précisé dans le film), un espion soviétique installé depuis des années aux États-Unis. Malgré ses réticences et ses craintes pour sa carrière, il accepte cette mission à la demande des autorités et de son cabinet d'avocats, pour montrer la supériorité d'un État de droit sur le système soviétique. Alors que pour le juge chargé de l'affaire, la condamnation à mort ne fait aucun doute, Donovan parvient à obtenir une peine de prison. Une partie de la population désapprouve ce verdict. La famille de Donovan est victime d'une agression et sa femme et ses enfants regrettent son engagement.
