Set in Baku at the turn of the 20th century, a young successful businessman Asgar (Rashid Behbudov) wishes to marry. He wants his bride to be the choice of his heart, however, Azerbaijani tradition restricted him from communicating with the lady as a lover before marriage. So Asgar decides to disguise himself as a mere cloth peddler and the young woman Gulchoehra (Leyla Badirbayli) falls in love with him. However, she is concerned that her father, Soltan bey (Alakbar Huseynzade) will not allow her to marry a cloth peddler. Young Asgar then reveals himself to her father and asks for her hand in marriage. Seeing that he is indeed a wealthy young man, the father agrees and the two are permitted to marry.

The film is a romantic comedy-drama whose protagonist is Chen Shaochang (Shi Hui), a widowed schoolmaster with three children. The film opens with Shaochang leading his three children to the cemetery for Tomb-Sweeping Day. Superimposed over them is a paraphrase of two lines from a Tang dynasty poem: "Just as Heaven loves to hide its intentions in the dark grasses / So does love between people only become clear when it is late." The children hastily pay their respects at their mother's grave and then ask to be allowed to go and play. As Chen stays behind to weed the grave, he overhears a young girl crying inconsolably. The girl is Liu Minhua (about seven years old), who is visiting her mother's grave with her father. Minhua's father sternly tells her to stop crying, but Shaochang comforts her. It turns out that Minhua's father and Shaochang are old friends. Minhua's father says that he is dissatisfied with the school his daughter is attending, and that he plans to send her to Shaochang's school. Shaochang agrees and asks how Minhua's stepmother treats her. Minhua's father confesses that she has been cruel to Minhua since they had a new child together.

En trépassant, lady Henriette ne laisse pas ses petits-enfants dans le besoin. Miguel, son jeune notaire, organise la succession dans son somptueux château et y convoque la descendance. Deux cousines, Milena et Séraphine, investissent les lieux. La seconde est escortée non par son frère, comme le voudrait l'usage, mais par son amant, un bellâtre dont elle commence d'ailleurs à se lasser, trouvant au fringant notaire bien des attraits. Sitôt pensé, sitôt fait : Miguel, oubliant les soins dont il entourait il y a peu Milena, succombe au charme de Séraphine. L'amant esseulé ne le restera pas, trouvant aussitôt consolation et avenante réparation dans les bras de Milena. A bonne école, César, le majordome, entreprend de vaincre les dernières résistances de la bonne.

Nancy Blanding est une richissime héritière américaine qui séjourne à Paris et qui dépense sans compter, jusqu'à ce qu'elle se fasse couper les vivres par son père. Le marquis de Cernay qui courtise la jeune femme mais qui a surtout des vues sur sa fortune engage Maurice Legrand afin de la suivre. Nancy désormais sans ressource se débrouille pour trouver du travail et une chambre dans un petit hôtel. Maurice se prend tellement au jeu en suivant la jeune femme qu'il en devient follement amoureux. Afin de retenir son attention, il simule un fracture en dégringolant d'un escalier public. La jeune femme le soigne et une idylle commence à se dessiner entre les deux jeunes gens. Cependant le marquis de Cernay informe Nancy que Maurice ne peut avoir de fracture puisqu'il l'a vue faire du vélo. La jeune américaine gifle Maurice et retourne à sa vie mondaine.
