On the morning of the Epsom Derby, a disparate group of people prepare to go to the races. Lady Helen Forbes, a recently widowed aristocrat is planning to make the journey in spite of the disapproval of her social set who consider it unseemly to go while still in mourning. David Scott, a newspaper cartoonist is ordered to go by his editor against his wishes. Meanwhile, as part of a charity raffle, a dissolute film star, Gerald Berkeley, is to escort a wealthy grand dame to Epsom for the day something he is equally reluctant about. Happily she falls and injures her leg, and her crafty housekeeper arranges for one of the young maids to go in her place. Meanwhile, in Battersea, a lodger kills a man whose wife he is having an affair with. They plan to flee the country, and also head to Epsom where he knows a tipster who can smuggle them out.

In 1936 London, mature showgirl Julia Packett (Greer Garson) leads a precarious life. She pretends to be contemplating suicide in order to finagle some money out of a male friend in order to pay her bills. Lorsque Lord Peter Wimsey, un détective amateur, se marie avec Harriet Vane, une écrivain spécialisée dans les romans policiers, ils s'engagent à abandonner le crime pour de bon. Pour faire une surprise à Harriet, Peter achète un cottage dans le Devon, où ils prévoient de passer leur lune de miel, accompagnés de leur fidèle valet Mervyn Bunter. Toutefois, le lendemain de leur arrivée, le corps de Noakes, à qui Lord Peter avait acheté le cottage, est retrouvé. Bien que ce village soit généralement paisible, un certain nombre de suspects sont possibles, de la nièce de Noakes à Sellon, le policier du village. Ils ne veulent pas s'impliquer dans l'enquête, mais l'arrivée de leur ami vieil l'inspecteur de Scotland Yard Andrew Kirk change la donne. Peter finit par trouver le coupable et le couple décide de se rendre dans un lieu plus calme mais, quand ils entendent des coups de feu à l'intérieur de l'auberge où ils comptaient s'arrêter, ils s'en éloignent préciitamment.

A musical with a trial. One of several Anna Neagle - Tullio Carminati vehicles of the 1930s, London Melody was one of five films directed in 1937 by Neagle's future husband, Herbert Wilcox. This time around, Carminatti is cast as Marius Andreani, a cultured Italian diplomat. While in London on business, Marius makes the chance acquaintance of boisterous cockney street entertainer Jacqueline (Neagle). It's love at first sight, but hero and heroine must undergo a dizzying series of roadblocks and misunderstandings before the climactic clinch.
