Boots Malone is a 1952 drama film starring William Holden as a down-on-his-luck sports agent and Johnny Stewart as a rich runaway who wants to become a jockey.

Synopsis

À sa fin de chance, l'agent de jockey "Boots" Malone est à un dîner avec son ami "Stash" Clements lorsque l'adolescent en fuite Thomas Gibson Jr. essaie de payer son repas avec un billet de cent dollars. Lorsque le cuisinier lui demande de revenir le matin pour sa monnaie, Boots intervient. Intéressé par l'argent lui-même, Boots prend le garçon sous son aile. Tommy est impatient de devenir jockey, alors il lui propose de payer Boots pour l'entraîner. Il fait bientôt diverses tâches autour des écuries.

John Wiley, un riche planteur de thé de Ceylan, épouse Ruth (prénommée Rita dans la version doublée en français) lors d'un voyage en Angleterre. Ruth apprend que la propriété est construite sur la piste que ceux-ci empruntaient pour aller s'abreuver et s’aperçoit également que la mémoire de son défunt beau-père hante la plantation.

John Conroy, à la tête d'une commission d'enquête et son ami le journaliste Jerry McKibben cherchent à démasquer Eichelberger qui dissimule sous une affaire de camionnage un vaste trafic illicite. Pourtant prévenu par son ami Mac Kibbon, il ne peut empêcher l'assassinat de son père, ancien policier corrompu. Down on his luck Louisiana horse trainer Lloyd Bourdelle (Walter Matthau) dreams of winning the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. Lloyd has three sons, Buddy, Randy and Casey. Buddy (Andrew Rubin) helps his father train horses, while Randy (Steve Burns) rides them in races. Lloyd takes Casey (Michael Hershewe) and Randy to a small bush track, to try to make some money by racing Casey's small pony, Gypsy. They find a match race with Mr Marsh (Robert Webber) and his daughter Kelly (Susan Myers), but play a trick on Marsh by tying a live chicken to Gypsy's saddle. Gypsy wins the race, but Marsh doesn't pay up, complaining that Lloyd cheated him by not having a rider on Gypsy. Lloyd laughs and remarks that the chicken is the best live jockey around. The races end and Lloyd takes Randy and Casey home.

The film centers around a professional ice hockey team called the Red Devils who are in the midst of an extended losing streak. The losing streak is due to the team's proprietor Jack Monohan (Steve Brodie) taking bribes from gamblers. The team receives fresh hope in the form of a new player, Mike Connors (Stanley Clements). Mike is an arrogant and self-assured man, who is also Jack's former childhood friend. His talent helps the team regain their formerly winning ways. However, the new star quickly becomes disliked for his egocentric attitude and playing style. Matters worsen when Jack's sister Margaret (Barbara Bestar) becomes attracted in Mike. This romantic interest leads to an out-and-out brawl between the two men. The fight is stopped after a local drifter named Brutus steps in but tragically is stabbed by Mike. The situation takes a turn for the worse when an angered Mike takes a bribe - to throw the extremely important final game - from a gambler named Rocky Gibraltar (Lyle Talbot). Fortunately, during the game, Mike sees sense with the help of a young, admiring fan named Davey (Duncan Richardson). He helps win the game.

Successful American lawyer Robert Hayward (William Holden) is in Kenya because his ex-wife Christine (Capucine) is having some problems with their eleven-year-old daughter Tina (Pamela Franklin), who has a great affinity with Africa, its customs and its wildlife. Tina spends much of her time in the company of the lion she raised from a cub. Christine has remarried and her new husband John Bullit (Trevor Howard), a former big-game hunter, now manages a large Kenyan animal preserve. Hayward and Bullit compete for the romantic affection of Christine and for the daughterly affection of Tina. The son of a local tribal chief sees Tina as a potential future wife, and his efforts to impress her prove to be disastrous.
