Lawrence and Emir Feisal of the Hejaz at the Paris Peace Conference after the end of the First World War. One of the conference's many concerns was determining the fates of territories formerly under the rule of the defeated Ottoman Empire. The film stars Ralph Fiennes (in his first film role) as T. E. Lawrence, Alexander Siddig (then credited as Siddig El-Fadil) as Faisal, Denis Quilley as Lord Curzon, and Nicholas Jones as Lord Dyson. It was made by Anglia Films and Enigma Television, and was first screened on 18 April 1992 on the ITV network.
The film was produced in 1990, a year after David Lean 's film epic, Lawrence of Arabia (1962), was re-released to cinemas. It serves as an unofficial sequel to that earlier film, as it depicts events that happened after the Great War.
The film's screenplay was written by Tim Rose Price. Christopher Menaul directed the film.
The film goes further than its predecessor in showing the effects of revisionist historians. It demonstrates contemporary concerns about British and international politics and ethnic conflict. It also explores further Lawrence's enigmatic personality and suggests more openly his alleged homosexuality.

The movie opens with Isabella Ford (Embeth Davidtz) in a pathetic state, traveling alone from Selmouth to Addisford on foot although she will be having a baby in a short while. In a deserted cabin on the way, she gives birth to a stillborn baby. She buries it and continues her journey to Addisford. She arrives there late in the evening and meets Ben Wainwright (Tom Bell), the lamplighter at Addisford. He asks her about herself and if she has any relatives in Addisford. Bella replies that she does not have any and she came looking for a man by the name of Arch Wilson (Greg Wise). Ben does not know him and seeing her plight, takes her to his house. She tells his wife (Gemma Jones) to get Bella washed up. Bella, now clean and dry, sits at the dinner table while Ben introduces his family. Ben has three children. Matty (Kenneth Anderson), Con (Ben Chaplin) and Jedd (James Purefoy). Matty, the youngest, is a shoemaker, Jedd is a soldier (cavalry) and Con does not have a specific profession. He does the household chores and helps his parents around. Throughout the movie, Con is shown to be reserved and introvert with a violent temper, although kind at heart. Bella is unable to eat any thing during the dinner, starts crying and faints when she stands up to go to bed.

Le film met en scène l'histoire de quatre générations d'une famille juive hongroise, les Sonnenschein. Un prologue nous montre le jeune Emmanuel Sonnenschein quittant son village pour s'installer dans la capitale hongroise. En effet, la distillerie de son père a été détruite par une explosion et celui-ci est décédé, à la suite de cet accident. Emmanuel emporte à Budapest le précieux carnet noir comportant les recettes secrètes de son père. Nous sommes au milieu du XIX siècle. Lorsque le film débute vraiment, les Sonnenschein se sont enrichis grâce à une boisson baptisée Sonnenschein (« lumière du soleil », en hongrois Napfény, en anglais Sunshine). Le film se divise en trois périodes historiques : de 1890 à 1914, de 1914 à 1944 et de 1945 à nos jours couvrant donc la fin de la double monarchie austro-hongroise, les deux guerres mondiales et le communisme, et dont le protagoniste principal, à chaque génération, est interprété les trois fois par Ralph Fiennes. L'histoire est narrée en voix off par l'ultime descendant d'Emmanuel Sonnenschein, son arrière-petit-fils Iván.
