Un scénariste est envoyé à Mexico afin de travailler à la révision du script d'un film. Il est drogué et, à son insu l'un de ses reins lui est volé. Avec l'aide d'une femme dont il ignore les motivations, il va tenter de mettre à jour ce trafic d'organes...
Starr Carter, 16 ans, vit entre deux mondes très différents : elle vient d'une zone résidentielle pauvre principalement habitée par des Noirs, mais fréquente une école privée pour élèves privilégiés, majoritairement blancs. Quand un jour elle voit son meilleur ami Khalil se faire tuer sous ses yeux sans raisons par un policier blanc, tous les efforts qu'elle a fait jusqu'ici fait pour s'adapter dans ces deux mondes très antagoniques sont réduits à néant. The brother shoots and kills the slave trader. Hop Woo is suspected of the crime and visited with blood atonement by the Hip-y-tong. The brother and Donovan, who loves the Chinese-American girl, rescue her from an underground passage below Chinatown, and Donovan shoots dead the highbinders. Maggie the mother has committed suicide. Donovan sells the gambling hall and buys a ranch, where he takes his bride Ah Woo and her brother.
