The film stars Arun Govil, Zarina Wahab, Rita Bhaduri and Amrish Puri. The film's music is composed by Raj Kamal, Lyrics by Indeevar, Gauhar Kanpuri, Maya Govind and others. Songs were performed by K J Yesudas, Sulakshana Pandit, Jaspal Singh, Kalyani Mishra, and Anand Kumar C.
The film was shot mostly in the interior and outskirts of the city Lucknow.
PLOT:
The movie captures the very heart of rural India.The story is quite simple like most Rajshri production movies.The plot starts off with chandramukhi,the city educated daughter of the village zamindar arriving at ramnagar,a typical village.There she meets her childhood friend birju aka brij mohan.He has a lovely voice and she encourages him to pursue it.His brothers love him very much and he is often excused for not working but his sisters in law hate him for it.He has a young niece who likes him a lot.Eventually brij and chandramukhi fall in love.But chandramukhi's father cuts it abruptly and sends her to lucknow.A short while later brij arrives at lucknow.Gitanjali who happens to be chandramukhi's friend is thrilled by his voice and helps him get a job at aakashvani through her father.brij returns to ramnagar to ask chandramukhis hand in marriage but is once again rebuked.By this time her family has lost its wealth in a court case and she becomes a teacher at the local school.He returns and goes on to become a great singer in mumbai with gita by his side.All through he yearns for chandra as she yearns for him.how he manages to marry her forms the rest of the story.

Kailashnath Malhotra est un riche industriel. Avec la complicité de son médecin, il s'invente une maladie et espère pouvoir ainsi faire pression sur son petit-fils Raj et le contraindre à se marier. En fait, Kailashnath ne désire qu'une chose, c'est de voir naître son arrière-petit-fils, l'héritier de la dynastie Malhotra. Raj n'est pas dupe, mais néanmoins, il accepte de rencontrer Priya, la fille d'un ami de Kailashnath. Raj et Priya, qui s'étaient rencontrés auparavant lors du mariage d'un ami commun, tombent amoureux et se marient. Quelques mois plus tard, cette belle famille unie est secouée par un drame. Priya, alors enceinte, a un accident et fait une fausse couche. Le médecin qui l'examine déclare qu'elle ne pourra plus jamais avoir d'enfant. Le couple est effondré. Craignant de décevoir Kailashnath, Raj cache la vérité à sa famille. Pour faire face à la situation, Priya envisage de faire appel à une mère porteuse. Cependant, tout doit rester secret. Raj, qui s'est chargé de trouver la personne idéale, propose à Madhubala, une prostituée, de mettre au monde un enfant qu'elle devra abandonner à la naissance. Elle accepte après avoir obtenu l'assurance de toucher une forte somme d'argent. Madhubala finit par tomber amoureuse de Raj mais finira par donner l'enfant face à la gentillesse et détresse de Priya.

Rana Mahendra Pratap Garewal (Mukesh Khanna) is a wealthy businessman along with his brother Vishwa (Dalip Tahil). They are good friends with Brijnath (Birju) (Paresh Rawal) who is initially very rich but loses all his wealth in a fire in his factory. The Garewal brothers had initially proposed the marriage of Rana's younger sister Madhu (Madhuri Dixit) and Brijnath's younger brother Raja (Sanjay Kapoor) (both are young; their brothers are adults). They break the marriage off. Shocked and saddened at the rejection by his best friends, Birju goes mad and gets electrocuted by accident. Raja then stays in the city outskirts with his brother taking care of him by doing petty jobs.

This film depicts the restrictive social conventions regarding inter-caste marriage and unwed motherhood in India. Julie (Laxmi) is a Christian Anglo-Indian girl with a loving, but alcoholic, father (Om Prakash), a dominating mother (Nadira), a younger brother and sister (Sridevi). She falls in love with her best friend's (Rita Bhaduri) brother Shashi Bhattacharya (Vikram Makandar), a Hindu boy. The lovers consummate their relationship, which leaves her pregnant. Shashi goes away to college, not knowing about her pregnancy. Her mother is distraught when Julie tells her about the pregnancy. They don't tell the rest of the family. Her mother thinks about getting Julie an abortion, but a devout Christian (Sulochana) talks her out of it. Julie is sent away to have her baby in secret. The rest of the family is told that Julie got a job. After the baby's birth, Julie's mother arranges for the child to be left in an orphanage, and demands that Julie return home and forget about the baby.

Badal (Bobby Deol) is a young man with a tragic childhood.
