Amol Palekar (Devanagari, अमोल पालेकर) né le 24 novembre 1944 à Mumbai est un acteur, scénariste, producteur et réalisateur indien de Bollywood et du cinéma indien en marathi.

Il a d'abord eu une carrière théâtrale avec la scène expérimentale marathi de Satyadev Dubey ; il forma sa propre troupe 'Aniket' en 1972.

Il s'initia au cinéma en marathi en 1971, avec le film (du mouvement new cinema) Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe réalisé par Satyadev Dubey.

En 1974 il participe en tant qu'acteur aux films Rajnigandha et Chhoti Si Baat de Basu Chatterjee puis ceux de Hrishikesh Mukherjee : Golmaal (Filmfare Award, Best Actor), Naram Garam.

Il est fameux pour ses interprétations de personnages de la classe moyenne, gendre idéal, hindou.

Il est devenu réalisateur avec le film marathi Aakriet, puis avec Paheli faisant partie des films indiens proposés aux Oscars.

Biographie

Amol Palekar was born to Kamlakar and Suhasini Palekar in a lower-middle-class family in Mumbai. He was raised along with his three sisters, Neelam, Rekha and Unnati, by his father who worked in the General Post Office and his mother who worked in a private company. He used to work at the Bank of India before he switched full-time to a career in acting. He also does some social work. He has two daughters and married writer Sandhya Gokhale after his divorce from his first wife, Chitra. Palekar regards himself as an agnostic.

The story revolves around a train journey in Howrah-Bombay Mail. Three Bollywood-stricken, Nagpur-based slackers, Vijay Verma, Bingo Nagpurkar, and Khoka Ganguli, board the Howrah-Bombay Mail, to head to Bombay to watch a cricket match, and to meet Bollywood megastar Mithun Chakraborty. During this trip, they drink a lot of alcohol. Vijay notices that the people in the next room in his train coach, are a couple with an attractive young woman. He goes over to introduce himself, and finds that the man calls himself Mr. C.K. Kadam, and the young woman's name is Manjula. Vijay wants to change his seat, so that he can near Manjula, but unfortunately that seat is taken up by a young man, Pankaj Nigam. Vijay attempts to forcibly take the seat from Pankay, and a fight ensues, and Vijay is asked to leave them alone. During a stopover, Pankaj leaves the train, and when the train starts, Mr. Kadam finds that Manjula has been killed. The police begin their investigation, and they have two suspects namely, Pankaj Nigam, and Vijay Verma. They also find out that Pankaj is not who he claims to be, and that his real name is Sanjay Chopra. Further investigations prove that neither Vijay nor Pankaj could have possibly murdered Manjula, leaving the police, Vijay and his friends on one hand, and Sanjay Chopra, to hunt for the third suspect, the one who actually killed Manjula, and the one who may also kill anyone who stands in his/her way.

Sethji (Shreeram Lagoo) is a widowed businessman who lives a comfortable life with his only daughter, Hansa, his son-in-law, Rahul (Amol Palekar), and a grandson, Munna. Shortly thereafter, Hansa also dies, leaving her husband Rahul to look after the business on his own. Things start to turn controversial once Rahul begins an affair with the maidservant Janki (Smita Patil), and it is soon revealed that Hansa's death may not have been a suicide, but was a cover-up. As the mysteries start to unfold, they leave a scarring emotional impact on Rahul, and test his relationship with his late wife's family and his new lover.
