The film featured Rahman and a newcomer Vindhya in the lead roles with Manivannan, Vijayakumar and Radharavi playing other important roles. The film's music was composed by A. R. Rahman, while Saravanan handled the cinematography. The film was released in 1999 but despite of the award-winning soundtracks and rave reviews, the film became a financial failure.
Synopsis
This film depicts the disputes between two forms of the dance styles and music, Classical Indian (in particular Carnatic music and Bharathanatyam danceform) against rural Tamil folk music and dance. The film depicts the misunderstanding and mutual ignorance of the two factions. The parallel plot in the movie is of the children and intended successors of the respective dance doyens falling in love with each other. The climax ends with a consensus of both the music genres as well as the young couple, hence the name Sangamam.Acteurs

Shriram (Rajiv Krishna) is the son of 'Pepsi' Parasuram (Vijayakumar) and the younger brother of Raghu (Raguvaran). Raghu is married to Bhanupriya and has a son. A college principal Janardan Rao (Vijay Kumar), keen to inculcate discipline in the students, gets his one time student and protégé Rajkumar (Chiranjeevi) posted as Telugu lecturer there. The ideal lecturer that he is, Rajkumar mingles with the students and becomes a comrade in arms and fools around with them in order to control them. One of his students Kanchana (Sakshi Sivanand) falls in love with him and asks him to marry her. He refuses her politely, saying that she will rescind her proposal if she knows his past and the flashback follows. During his student days in Delhi, Rajkumar falls in love with Preeti (Roshni), his guardian angel Janardan Rao's daughter. Vikram (Sathya Prakash) also loves her. When Preeti turns down his overtures, Vikram kills her in rage. Rajkumar in turn kills Vikram and goes to jail for five years. After serving the jail term now he has come back as a lecturer.
