The directorial debut film was about two fugitives and their relationship with a prostitute. The film was made in 1972, and was initially refused censor certificate and banned by the Censor Board of India for "mocking the sacred institution of marriage", and was thus held up for 14 months. However, after extended delays the Government stepped in, overruled the Board and passed the film, along with four other banned films. When it was finally released in 1974, it received neither critical or commercial success. It would take another decade and unsuccessful films in between, before his directed confessional cinema classic, Arth (1982) and later Saaransh (1984), which got him critical acclaim.

Pooja (Shabana Azmi), who grew up as an orphan girl and always dreamt of owning a house, becomes insecure when she finds out that she and her husband, Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), have to leave the apartment they rent. The twist that occurred when Inder gives her the keys of a new house proves to be double-edged, when it is revealed that he is in love with another woman, Kavita (Smita Patil), with whom he earned the money (in the film industry) for the new apartment. While previously giving advice to her maid (Rohini Hattangadi) cheated by her husband, now Pooja becomes herself involved in a similar situation. When Inder deserts Pooja for Kavita, she chooses to leave the apartment for a women's hostel with only 7px2000 that she had when she got married. She is helped by Raj (Raj Kiran) to surpass the difficulties of life as a single person, to find a job and to rely morally on herself. Raj and Pooja become good friends. Gradually, Kavita's mental instability deepens her fears of insecurity, even after Inder requests Pooja to sign the divorce papers.

The year is 1975, the place is Mahim, Bombay. This is the story of Tikku (Paresh Rawal), a eunuch, the only child of yesteryear Bollywood actress Nazneen Begum. She has fallen upon hard times, is virtually destitute and is dependent on Tikku, who does make-up/hair-dressing of Bollywood actresses. When she passes away, Tikku is beside himself with grief. Vikas Chandra (Vinod Mehra) and Aarti (Rekha) have recently married, and they move into their new apartment. One day they go out to watch a late night Hindi movie at a local cinema theatre. The movie gets over well after midnight, and as no cab is found this hour, they decide to walk home by foot. On the way, they are suddenly waylaid by four men, who assault Vikas, leaving him unconscious, and forcibly take Aarti with them. When Vikas regains his senses he finds himself in hospital with a head wound. He is informed that Aarti is in the same hospital, after being gang-raped and assaulted. This incident makes headlines in the media, and is also a subject of discussion by politicians during their election campaign. Vikas feels haunted by this incident, and does not know how to act further. Aarti, on the other hand, has been completely traumatised, and is unable to trust any male. Now the couple faces a serious crisis leading to a loveless relationship, and only a miracle can bring the old spark back into their married life.

Osaka. Fusako Owada, une veuve de guerre, ayant perdu son bébé tuberculeux, rencontre par hasard sa sœur Natsuko, qui, jusque-là, vivait en Corée. Celle-ci lui apprend le décès de leurs parents, victimes de malnutrition. Entraîneuse de cabaret, Natsuko s'installe chez Fusako qui travaille comme secrétaire chez un patron du marché noir. Fusako est également la maîtresse de celui-ci. Mais, un jour, fuyant une perquisition policière, elle le surprend, chez elle, en compagnie de sa sœur. Terriblement déçue, elle choisit alors de se prostituer. La fille de ses amis, Kumiko, est volée par un faux-étudiant, dépouillée par des filles de joie "pillardes". Fusako échoue bientôt à l'hôpital où sa sœur, partie à sa recherche, finira par la retrouver. Natsuko est enceinte et, tout comme sa sœur, atteinte de la syphilis.
