Edward "Monks" Leeford is a character in the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. He is actually the criminally-inclined half-brother of Oliver Twist, but he hides his identity. Monks's parents separated when he was a child, and his father had a sexual and romantic relationship with a young woman, Agnes Fleming. This resulted in Agnes's pregnancy. She died in childbirth after giving birth to the baby that would be named Oliver Twist.Joué par les acteurs

The first episode revolved around Oliver's parents (Agnes Fleming and Edwin Leeford) as they struggled to fight their love for each other. Edwin struggled with his estranged wife Elizabeth Leeford, mother of his son Edward Leeford (later also "Monks"), and Agnes struggled with her family's life. When it came to them both being together, Elizabeth murdered Edwin and planned on murdering Agnes. She made Monks kill her, but Agnes ran away; her sister Rose (Keira Knightley) witnessed this and was left traumatized. Agnes was pregnant with Oliver when she ran away. She ran into the main streets of London and collapsed; she was then taken into the workhouse where she gave birth, and she died shortly after.

Quelques détails secondaires de l'intrigue sont éludés, le plus important est la fin du film qui ne montre pas la condamnation de Fagin à la peine de mort et ses derniers moments dans sa cellule où il reçoit la visite d'Oliver.

Né vers les années 1830 en Angleterre, dans une petite bourgade, orphelin de mère, et abandonné par son père, Oliver Twist est placé dans une institution qui exploite ses pensionnaires. Dès qu’il fût en âge de travailler, il devient l’apprenti d’un croque-mort qui le maltraite. Il s’enfuit et part à Londres où il sera confronté à un choix de vie : suivre les truands ou se faire adopter par la « bonne société ».
