The film is set at the Russian imperial post at Fort Ross in California in the early Nineteenth Century. A visiting American army offices becomes romantically involved with an aristocratic woman whose criminal husband is being held as a prisoner at the Fort.
The young Count Georg Wolkersheim (Willy Fritsch) is sent to the Congress of Vienna to represent the interests of his country, Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz. Tensions arise between the count, his wife Melanie (Maria Holst), and their two chamberlains (Hans Moser and Theo Lingen), and when the four of them attend a court ball, Melanie leaves Georg, assumes the identity of a famous actress, and attracts the affections of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (Fred Liewehr). Georg quits the ball and returns to his lodgings to wait for his wife. Meanwhile, the two servants plot to further inflame Georg's jealousy by posing as Ludwig to commission a portrait of Melanie from the famous artist Moritz Daffinger (Egon von Jordan). The next day, however, Georg and Daffinger expose the servants' ruse, Ludwig reveals to Melanie that he has discovered her true identity, and all is forgiven.
Afin d'éviter un mariage arrangé avec un homme qu'elle ne l'aime pas, Sarah Millick se enfuit à Vienne avec son professeur de musique, Carl Linden, qui elle fait l'amour. Ils sont mariés. A Vienne, ils luttent pour gagner leur vie en faisant de la musique. Carl écrit une opérette et essaie de l'obtenir produit. Ils sont aidés par le baron le long de Vienne, mais ses intentions ne sont pas honorables. Il tue Carl dans un combat à l'épée. Un grand producteur ne met sur l'opérette, avec Sari en tête - mais sans son mari, il est une victoire douce-amère.
Parce que Jean Mariole veut se debarrasser de sa maitresse, il simule un enlevement mais la jeune fille qui l'aime, apprenant qu'il vit avec la sequestree, se considere comme trahie. Jean se reconcilie avec les deux femmes, il dedommage l'une et epouse l'autre.
Barnabé, flûtiste occasionnel, est pris par erreur pour le comte de Marengo que Madame Petit-Durand veut marier à sa fille. Mais cette dernière a déjà fait son choix malgré l'autorité de sa mère. Quant à Barnabé, il est amoureux de la fille du garde-chasse, et le véritable comte veut épouser sa petite amie. L'aventure se terminera par trois mariages heureux.
