Jerry North (William Post Jr.) and his wife Pam (Gracie Allen) return home after a night away in a holiday spirit. The spirit soon vanishes when the body of a man falls out of the liquor closet. The corpse is identified as Stanley Brent, the estranged husband of Carol Brent (Rose Hobart), a friend of Pam's. As the clues are unearthed, it appears that some member of the North's social circle, who knew they would be away, gained entrance to their apartment, asked Brent to come there and murdered him. Pam tries to establish alibis for all of her friends, and in doing so inadvertently established who killed Brent.

Grosvenor (Mowbray), the Kilbournes' butler, discovers at breakfast that the family silver has been stolen by the latest tramp, Ambrose, whom Emily Kilbourne (Burke) had taken under her wing as the chauffeur, in her latest attempt to reform fallen and destitute men, much to the exasperation of the rest of the family. A distressed Emily swears off taking in any more tramps, to the delight of the rest of the family. However, later in the morning, Wade Rawlins (Aherne) appears at the doorstep. His car had broken down; when he got out, it rolled off a cliff. He wants to use the telephone, but is instead immediately adopted by Emily Kilbourne, despite the rude efforts of Grosvenor and Emily's daughters Geraldine "Jerry" (Bennett) and Marion (Granville). Further attempts to convince Mrs. Kilbourne to get rid of this latest tramp are blissfully ignored.

À Londres, Ward Andrews retrouve par hasard Philip Monrell, son ancien camarade de chambrée à l'université, qui vient de rentrer de Paris. Philip invite Ward dans sa maison de campagne, où ils rencontrent Stella Bergen, la secrétaire de M Monrell, la mère de Philip. Cette dernière craint que son fils néglige son travail à l'aciérie familiale et espère que Stella, qu'elle aime comme sa propre fille, épousera Philip. Stella l'aime bien, mais elle est plus attirée par Ward. Philip semble s'en satisfaire, mais il est heureux de voir partir Ward. M Monrell annonce alors qu'elle part en voyage en Afrique pour sa santé, et que Philip doit diriger l'usine. Stella encourage Philip à faire que sa mère désire malgré ses craintes, et il lui révèle alors que lorsqu'il était à Paris il s'était fait passer pour Ward et qu'il s'était senti mieux. Il demande alors à Stella de l'épouser et elle accepte.
