West of the Water Tower is a lost 1923 silent film comedy drama produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by Rollin Sturgeon and is based on the novel of the same name by Homer Croy. Glenn Hunter and May McAvoy are the stars of this film.

Vienne, 1914. L'aristocratique famille von Wildeliebe-Rauffenbourg dissimule sa ruine derrière les apparences d'un train de vie fastueux en son palais. Le Prince Ottokar et la Princesse Maria ne voient d'autre issue financière que de trouver un mariage fortuné pour leur fils unique Nicki. Celui-ci, dandy aux mœurs libertines, séduit une pauvre fille, la jolie Mitzi dont il tombe sincèrement amoureux. Mais, lui dit sa mère, et c'est la morale - fort peu morale - de ce film éblouissant, "l'amour est une chose, le mariage en est une autre". La scène finale, symboliste et baroque, où la grandiose cérémonie du mariage de Nicki avec Cecelia, une riche héritière boiteuse et sans joie, est entrecoupée de mains de squelette se déplaçant sur le clavier de l'orgue, range cette union résignée non pas du côté du bonheur, mais de la mort.

Le père d'une famille excentrique, les Wheeler, embauche un ex-soldat, Clarence, comme homme de mains. Clarence s'éprend de la gouvernante de la famille, Violet. Quant à M Wheeler, elle nourrit peu à peu une attirance grandissante pour Clarence. De son côté, Hubert Stein, le secrétaire de M. Wheeler, montre un jour à M. Letitia "Tish" Carberry, an eccentric New England spinster, lives with her nephew, Charlie Sands, and her two cronies, Aggie Pilkington and Lizzie Wilkins, live in a near-by boarding house. Cora Edwards also lives at the boarding house and is in love with Charlie, who, however, loves Katherine "Kit" Bowser, the daughter of Judge Horace Bowser. Tish and her cronies promote a romance between Cora and Charlie, but Cora decides it is Theodore "Ted" Bowser she loves and they are secretly married before Ted leaves for a training school in Toronto, learning to ferry planes to England. Charlie and Katherine also elope secretly. Cora, anxious to join Ted, borrows money from the church organ fund and leaves, telling no one where she is going. Tish takes the blame for the shortage. Cora raises the money to repay Tish and goes to the post office, while Ted is on a flight. Before she mails it, she opens a letter she received from the Canadian government announcing Ted's loss at sea. She faints, is taken to the hospital and gives birth to a boy, and dies. The only clue to her identity is the letter addressed to Tish. She arrives, decides the baby is Charlie's son, declares herself the grandmother and takes it home. Once there, she and her cronies take care of it in a rented cottage and she now claims it is her own. As a result Charlie, not knowing why she makes such a claim, has her put into a sanitarium for mental cases, and he and Katherine take the baby and plan to send it to an orphanage as Katherine does not realize it is her own nephew. Tish's essentric friends come to Katherine and Charlie and tell Katherine, Charlie and Judge Bowser the truth as they know it according to Cora's letter. Kit is angry that Charlie "cheated" on her, but accepts the baby, and Charlie takes his aunt Tish out of the sanitarium and brings her home. When Charlie brings Tish home Ted, Katherine's brother, suddenly arrives home and claims the baby as his and Cora's. Ted then appoints Tish as the babies guardien, as she was willing to take care of the child originally with no regard for her own reputation. The movie ends with Ted announcing that he is joining the army, and Tish firing the bulter.

As described in a film magazine, Lovey Mary (Clark) is an inmate of an orphanage who runs away a little boy with whom she has become strongly attached. She finds refuge on a rainy night with Mrs. Wiggs (Carr), a mother of five who lives in a wretched settlement known as the Cabbage Patch. Mrs. Wiggs feeds and shelters them, and lies to a sheriff looking to return them to the orphanage. There are a series of interactions with the amusing characters that live in the Cabbage Patch with brings about the growth and improvement in Mary. It is through Mary that the child she has been mothering becomes legitimate and the whole family obtains prosperity.

Une petite ville de province, Monsieur et Madame Madison, un couple avec un garçonnet espiègle et dissipé ainsi que deux jeunes filles, Laura, réservée et romantique et Marianne délurée et volage. Cette dernière rencontre fortuitement Corliss, un aigrefin qui s'introduit dans la petite famille, se fait passer pour un investisseur et propose au père de réaliser un montage financier contre la promesse d'un poste de secrétaire et trésorier dans cette nouvelle entreprise. Madison trouve des investisseurs, mais reste dans l'attente d'une demande de renseignements commerciaux avant de signer. Corlisse demande à Marianne de faire pression auprès de son père pour obtenir cette signature. Madison restant sur ses positions, une violente dispute éclate entre celui-ci et sa fille qui changeant de tactique simule un malaise, puis se résout à imiter la signature de son père. Corliss a promis le mariage à Marianne , mais celle-ci se rendant au rendez-vous à son hôtel se rend compte qu'il a disparu avec armes et bagages. Dépitée, elle s'en retourne chez Dick, son ancien amant qui l'éconduit avec tact en lui expliquant qu'il est désormais amoureux de sa sœur Laura. Les investisseurs viennent réclamer le remboursement de l'argent engagé, Madison ne pourra le rembourser qu'en vendant sa maison. Marianne avoue l'imitation de signature, mais le père refuse de l'accabler. La fin du film montre Marianne en ménage avec l'un de ses anciens soupirants gauche et obèse et elle le remercie "de tout ce qu'il a fait pour son père", juste avant que toute la famille se réunissent chez eux pour faire la fête.
