A remake of the 1950 Hindi film Raj Rani, Paradesi was jointly produced by Anjali Devi and her husband P. Adinarayana Rao under the newly formed banner "Anjali Pictures". The film starred Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi in the lead. It launched the career of Sivaji Ganesan, who along with S. V. Ranga Rao, Pandari Bai and Vasantha played a prominent role. The film deals with incest relationship.

In the kingdom of Malarpuri, the queen (P. Kannamba) delivers a male child. Her brother Naganathan (M. N. Nambiar) replaces it with a dead child with help from a maidservant, and informs king Varaguna Pandiyan (Sadasiva Rao) that the newborn is dead. To Naganathan's surprise, the queen gives birth to another boy soon after delivering the first. Minister Gunaseelar arrives by then and the king is informed of the birth of two children, one dead and one alive. Everyone is happy that at least one is alive. Naganathan decides to kill the first infant and hands it over to his servant Somappa (Stunt Somu). However, Somappa and his wife raise the prince in a forest.

Ramu (MGR) is the cowardly one – the heir to all riches of Poonjolai Jamin. He has been raised that way by his sister's husband Narendran (Nambiar). Ramu shivers at the very mention of his brother in law's name and a whiplash is Narendran's favorite form of punishment. Narendran wants to get Ramu married to Leela (Saroja Devi) but she is turned off by his cowardice. Ilango (MGR) is a jobless young man, prone to pick a fight and for this reason, the cause of trouble for his mother. Circumstances lead to Ramu and Ilango taking each other's place. Ilango teaches a lesson to Narendran while Ramu learns the ways of the world. Then Ilango teaches Narendran a lesson which forces him to leave the house. Due to this, his sister scolds and he plans to leave by reveal that he was not Ramu. Then the relation of the story reveals that Ramu and Ilango are brothers. With Ramu being kidnapped and Ilango going to help his brother and revealing everything to narendran brings the film to climax.

Govindaiah (Doraiswamy), a pleader gumasta wants Raja to marry Chitti. She, however, loves an endearing bodybuilder to whom by traditional obligations, she rightfully belongs. Govindaiah makes Raja's marriage to Chitti on the precondition for helping to find a husband for Raja's sister Ammadu (Varalakshmi).
