Vettaithidal Chinnaiahpillai "Sivaji" Ganesan (1 October 1928 – 21 July 2001) was an Indian stage and film actor active during the latter half of the 20th century and was one of the most respected film actors in India. He was well known for his versatility and acting skills with numerous roles depicted on screen, which gave him also the Tamil honorific name Nadigar Thillagam (English: the pride of actors). He progressed from a stage actor since his childhood to the filmdom with such an authority that the Tamil cinema considered as the golden era. In a career spanning close to five decades he has acted in nearly 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. His eidetic memory helped him remember his scripts at a glance.

Ganesan was the first Indian film actor to win a "Best Actor" award in an International film festival, the Afro-Asian Film Festival held in Cairo, Egypt in 1960. Many leading South Indian film actors have stated that their acting was influenced by Ganesan. He was also the first Indian actor to be made a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Ganesan is remembered as an iconic figure of Tamil cinema. He is referred to as "The Marlon Brando of Indian Cinema". He received the President's Award for Best Tamil Actor on numerous occasions. He is a recipient of four Filmfare Awards South and a National Film Award (Special Jury). In 1997, Ganesan was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, highest honour for films in India. He received in 1998 the NTR National Award. In spite of his celebrated film career, his short stint in politics became a futile attempt.

Le docteur Saravanan, un psychiatre, retourne en Inde voir son ami Sendhil et sa femme Ganga. Ceux-ci emménagent avec toute la famille, quelques jours plus tard, dans un palais réputé pour être hanté par le fantôme d’une danseuse, Chandramukhi, morte il y a 150 ans. Peu après leur venue, d’étranges phénomènes se produisent. Saravanan décide de mener l’enquête et d’éclaircir ce mystère : est-ce un coup monté ? Qui est le responsable ? Durga, la fille du gardien ? Ou bien la machiavélique tante de Sendhil, mécontente du mariage de son neveu ? A moins que le fantôme vienne jouer le trouble-fête…

Après avoir terminé ses études, Padayappa revient dans sa famille. Il retrouve son père (Sivaji Ganesan), le très respecté zamindar du village. La riche et arrogante Nilambari tombe éperdument amoureuse de Padayappa, mais il lui préfère sa jolie servante Vasanthira. Se sentant insultée, elle lui voue une haine éternelle et jure sa perte. Dans le même temps, Sivaji Ganesan meurt et, suite à un complot, Padayappa et sa mère sont expulsés de la maison familiale. Ils se voient alloués un pauvre arpent de terre rocailleux comme seul héritage, mais notre héros promet qu’il aura sa revanche. Celle-ci se dessine très vite puisqu’il découvre du granit sur son terrain, et dix-huit ans plus tard le voilà devenu richissime. Mais Nilambari ne l’a pas oublié et compte bien se venger de celui qui l’a rejeté.

Vijay (Vijay) is a rich young business man, whose only one aim in life is to have fun, is the managing director of a big tea estate in Ooty and his company goes on a big loss because of his mismanagement. Vijay spends most of his time in partying and flirting with girls whenever he feels like. To manage the loss to his company, Vijay invites his father Rajasekar (who is in the United States) to come to India to sign some documents. As fate would have it, Vijay's father dies in a plane crash on his way to India. His maternal uncle (Manivannan) comes up with the idea of having another elderly person to act as Vijay's father for a while until the documents are signed. So they visit a senior home, where they meet Selvam (Sivaji Ganesan) and they request him to act as Vijay's father. He agrees to it and starts to act as Vijay's father.

Prabhu, hailing from an orthodox Brahmin community gets a job with Calcutta Constructions as supervisor. Calcutta Company has been in efforts to restructure their land by vacating an illegal colony lying adjacent to its premises. Popularly known as Vietnam Colony, it is inhabited by mainly daily labourers. The company has been in efforts to demolish the colony for long time, but failed to do so. The colony is now under the rule a few hardcore criminals to whom the residents have to pay specific amount every week. Now, Prabhu is appointed by company to evacuate the colony, by dealing with these criminals. He is assisted by Goundamani. Both arrive in the colony under the disguise of professional writers who are planning to write a story on the life of colony residents. Upon arrival, both enter the house of Manorama in search of a house, but she mistakes them to have come to see her daughter Vineetha and calls Unni to bring tea and snacks. But after knowing about the goof happened, she lets them stay on the top floor of her house. Upon the advice of the House broker, Manorama believes that with time, her daughter might fall in love with Prabhu and might get married to this educated Brahmin guy. In the coming days, Prabhu befriends with various members of the colony and tries to read out their idea about vacating the colony. But he realizes that it is not an easy task to evacuate the people and thinks about different plans to be operated. From Manorama, Prabhu comes to know that the entire colony was owned by Nassar, a millionaire, who even gave up his mom for money. What happens next is rest of story.
