Divorce and the Daughter is a 1916 American silent drama film directed by Frederic Richard Sullivan. The film stars Florence La Badie, Edwin Stanley, Ethelmary Oakland and Kathryn Adams.

Synopsis

Alicia is a poor girl living in the city with her family. When her father receives an inheritance, he is able to follow his dream of becoming an artist and moves his family near an artist's colony in the country. There he falls prey to a scheming widow, and he and his wife separate. Alicia, meanwhile, has become involved with a young man who is the widow's accomplice, and she throws over her former suitor, Dr. John Osborne. The young man is a proponent of free love, but he gets a little too free with Alicia and she beans him with a small statuette. She goes running back to her doctor sweetheart, and her parents decide to reconcile, since their separation obviously isn't doing their children any good.

Lorsque les États-Unis entrent en guerre, une mère envoie ses deux premiers fils aux champs de bataille, mais son cœur en est brisé. Elle apprend bientôt que l'aîné est porté manquant et que le cadet est blessé, et décide alors de garder à la maison le benjamin. Celui-ci, influencé par la littérature pacifiste, accompagne de bon cœur sa mère dans leur maison au bord de la mer, mais le père, lui, a honte de ce comportement. Alors qu'ils sont en train de se quereller à ce propos, les survivants d'un navire torpillé par un sous-marin allemand arrivent cherchant un refuge. La mère et le fils réalisent alors l'importance de la cause et le fils s'engage dans l'armée. À Noël, les trois fils rentrent à la maison, l'aîné accompagné de sa femme, une Française.

As described in a film magazine, Jules Marin (Williams), a Paris thief so clever that the police cannot catch him, has been decorated with the Croix de guerre and loves children. He is popular with the underworld and people warn him when the police are coming. He makes an Apache jealous, and this man tells the prefect of police Henri Duval (Shaw) that Marin will be at a particular restaurant. However, Marin is told that one of his adopted orphan, whom he has picked out among the refugees, is sick, and leaves, thus saves himself. On the way to the orphan his car breaks down, and he goes to the home of jeweler Anton Deprenay (Standing) to get a car. The daughter Mme. Helen (Adams) is there alone and, believing that he is on an mission of mercy, lets him use the car, with him leaving his military decoration as collateral. The police later follow and take down the number of the car. When the prefect goes to the Deprenays, the car has been returned. Later, at a party, Marin is introduced to Helen as M. Picard, but she recognizes his voice. Marin recognizes a crooked promoter at the party. A necklace is stolen, and Helen suspects Marin, but he proves his innocence and recovers the gems. Helen tells him that when he gets as good a recognition from society as he obtained in the field of battle, she will be his friend. Marin learns that the promoter has a stock market scheme to swindle the community out of millions, so, while posing as an investigator from Scotland Yard, Marin helps the prefect get the money back. He and Helen ride off in an automobile.

Timothy Webb est déshérité par son père, qui lui reproche son mode de vie insouciant. En bleu de travail, Tim part travailler dans l'usine que son père a légué à son oncle, et y devient plombier. Il rejoint le syndicat et découvre que Nicholas Schonn, un bolchevik opportuniste qui fait semblant d'être en accord avec les ouvriers, est en train de fomenter une agitation sociale, aidé en cela par la féministe Elsa Smolski. En faisant croire qu'il rejoint leurs rangs, Tim déjoue les plans de Schonn qui voulait escroquer de 50 000 $ l'héritière Sylvia Kingston, et gagne par la même occasion l'amour de Sylvia. Celle-ci lui offre alors le chèque, qui utilise l'argent pour racheter l'usine de son père et, après avoir augmenté tous les employés, prouve son mérite et parvient à rejeter les fauteurs de troubles hors de l'usine.
