Joseph J. Dowling contribue à cent-trente-huit films américains sortis de 1913 à 1926, donc exclusivement durant la période du muet. Un de ses premiers est le western Le Serment de Rio Jim de (et avec) William S. Hart, sorti en 1914.

Marie Downey (Patsy Ruth Miller), a trusting country girl falls in love with a touring stage-actor, Clifford Dudley (Clive Brook) as his touring troupe takes up residence in the hotel run by Marie's father. Both lovestruck and stagestruck, Marie follows Clifford to old Broadway, where she ends up getting a job as a chorus girl. She tries desperately to get in touch with Clifford, but he acts as if he does not even know she's alive as he becomes a matinée idol on Broadway. Thanks to a lucky break, Marie becomes the star of the show in which she is appearing, whereupon Clifford finally acknowledges her existence. This time, however, she gives Clifford the cold shoulder then turns her back on New York and heads home (hence the title). Clifford follows her on the train, setting the stage for a tender reconciliation.

William Tudor has a huge debt and is forced to give up his family castle. He sells it to war millionaire John Kershaw and goes to London to visit his granddaughter Irene. Meanwhile, Tudor's nephew and Irene's sweetheart Owen travels to South Africa to oversee his father's mines. Irene becomes a chorus girl at the Gaiety Theatre. Here, John's son Christopher Kershaw falls in love with her. She doesn't want to have anything to do with him, but becomes desperate after her father gets ill. She gets the message Owen has been killed in the war and agrees to marry Christopher. Right after the marriage, an alive Owen shows up at the castle. Meanwhile, a huge chandelier crashes down on Christopher's head. He is now killed, which makes Irene and Owen able to reunite. Owen buys the castle back from John and Irene's grandfather comes back to his home.
