Joan Prescott (Joan Crawford) is a vacuous and flirtatious daughter of the wealthy Montana rancher, John Prescott (Lloyd Ingraham). On the train, Joan's sister, Elizabeth (Dorothy Sebastian) tells her she's in love with Jeff (Ricardo Cortez). Jeff is more smitten with Joan and kisses her. He expresses dismay at how spoiled Prescott's daughters are. Joan conceals her identity, refusing to say her name. She tells him to think of something he loves and call her that, and he chooses "Montana.

Prospector Tom Grant discovers found a rich gold vein up South. His findings however, soon attract landowner Bart Eaton. Tom's sister Mary heads for the gold fields with Eaton and his men following. At the beginning of the film, Bill Ralston arrests a bad cowboy named Deadwood and takes him to Judge Williams. Ralston returns to his girl, Sally Dixon, before she is shot in the chest 8 times by Brant, a goon of Deadwood's, and Poe Daggett, an old enemy of Ralston. Ralston shoots Daggett in the knee, and the two run away into the saloon. He sees all of his friends including Sheriff Fin Elder at the Saloon, and they sing him a song. Then Daggett comes behind the Sheriff and tries to kill him, but Poe's brother, Walt, stops him from doing it. Everyone gets into a big fight, and in the end, the only survivors are Bill Ralston and Sheriff Fin Elder.

Two United States Marshals ride into the town of Verdine undercover and separately. The town has been plagued by recurring robberies of the same bank and the stagecoach when shipments of gold are aboard. Sandy rides in during a bank robbery in progress and kills one of the robbers. Posing as a cobbler Sandy is dismayed when the town rewards him with the vacant fully equipped shop of the deceased cobbler, a trade Sandy knows nothing about. Jack trails the outlaw gang and poses as an outlaw on the run to join the gang to replace their late member. Both law men realize that the gang is getting inside information on the bank and the gold shipments and must identify the source before bringing the outlaws to justice.
