Shwetambari Nath (Urmila Matondkar) mène une vie aisée dans la cité sainte de Banaras en Inde avec sa mère, Gayetri (Dimple Kapadia) et son père, Mahendra (Raj Babbar). Elle est étudiante à l’université et est maintenant en âge de se marier. Satpal Shukla (Arif Zakaria), inspecteur de police, souhaite l’épouser. Mais Shwetambari tombe amoureuse de Soham (Ashmit Patel), orphelin d’une caste inférieure à la sienne qui vit avec une femme nommée Dadi (Meenal Patel), femme de ménage. Cette différence sociale les empêche de se réunir. Cependant, Shwetambari continue de fréquenter Soham, prétextant apprendre la musique. Elle a confiance en lui qui s’initie à la méditation avec son gourou Babaji (Naseeruddin Shah) et qui est convaincu qu’il n’y a pas de mal à s’aimer même si l’on n’appartient pas à la même caste. Shwetambari présente Soham à ses parents qui ne le trouvent pas du tout à leur goût. Lorsque Shwetambari refuse d’épouser qui que ce soit d’autre, ses parents reviennent sur leur decision et approuvent ses fiançailles avec Soham, particulièrement après avoir appris qu’il n’était pas d’une caste inférieure mais d’une caste inconnue et qu’il n’avait pas de lien filial avec Dadi. Peu de temps avant le mariage, la vie de Shwetambari plonge dans la tourmente lorsque Satpal lui apprend que Soham a été assassiné. Dans son chagrin, elle devient solitaire et soucieuse. Son père demande à un ami d’enfance, Dr. Gopal Bhattacharya (Akash Khurana), psychiatre de Boston aux États-Unis, de la soigner. Le docteur dit qu’il est possible que Shwetambari soit malade car elle parle comme si Soham était encore en vie et prétend rencontrer et parler à un saint homme du nom de Babaji qui est décédé depuis des centaines d’années. Mais Shwetambari sait qui sont les responsables de la mort de Soham et elle decide de quitter Banaras avec ce secret pour aller à l'Ile Maurice où elle gagne une solide reputation en tant que guérisseuse spirituelle. Dix-sept ans plus tard, son père est mourant et elle hésite entre retourner à Banaras pour le voir ou rester loin de tous les problèmes passés. Mais elle décide finalement de retourner dans sa chère cité et de lever le voile sur le meurtre de Soham.

The Saikia family are an extremely wealthy family in Assam. The two sons of the family are Sanjay (Sayaji Shinde) and Sunil Saikia (Sanjay Suri). The latter being the kinder of the two whilst the former is very hot-tempered and has occasional mood swings. The parents decide to get him married to Durga (Raveena Tandon), a lower caste girl from a poor family, thinking she will be able to cope with Sanjay's temper. Sanjay initially refuses to marry Durga, but when his mother threatens to cut him off from the family will he relents. Thus, Durga marries Sanjay and looks forward to her new life. From day one, Durga is subjected to physical and mental harm by her husband. To add insult to injury, he spends their wedding night with a prostitute called Chameli. Durga continues to be tortured by her husband and after a drunken night he rapes her.

The movie focuses on Mahesh (Jeetendra), an honest and diligent young man, who has no knowledge of his background as he was raised in an orphanage. One day, out with his friend Badru (Shahrukh Khan), he meets Reshma (Sumalatha), who is also an orphan. Badru advices Mahesh to make a move on her, though as he approaches her, the two fall in love and Badru decides to get them married. They then live a harmonious life, and soon are proud parents of a healthy young boy who they name Lucky (Manzoor Ali). Lucky grows up to be as honest and diligent as his dad, and his future appears to be very bright. When Lucky sees his father smoking, he starts to as well, but when his father stops him, he explains that an old man around his school sells him cigarettes. When Badru and Mahesh approach the old man, he tries to run. Badru chases after him, and is then run over by a truck. Badru tragically dies, leaving Mahesh, Reshma and Lucky on their own.
