Based on a 1926 work by D. H. Lawrence, the film follows two sisters, Lucille and Yvette, who come to the English countryside to vacation. La veille de Noël 1938, au sud de Londres. Mme Vizzard est veuve et arrive à joindre les deux bouts en louant des chambres au 10, rue Dulcimer : les Josser occupent le rez-de-chaussée, les Boon le premier et Connie Coke le dernier.
