Man and Wife is a 1923 American silent domestic drama film starring Maurice Costello and a young Norma Shearer. It was directed by John L. McCutcheon, produced by an independent producer and released by second tier Arrow Film Company.

A nitrate print of the film is held at the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

Lisbeth is a modern woman who thinks that marriage is old fashioned. She has two men in her life; Steve, who wants to marry her and Alan, who wants her to travel with him. John Carteret (Leslie Howard) is a wealthy man with a huge estate. He was set to marry Moonyeen Clare (Norma Shearer), but on their wedding day she was accidentally killed during the wedding ceremony by her drunken and jealous ex-fiance Jeremy Wayne (Fredric March), who actually meant to kill John. John has spent the rest of his life in mourning. However, Moonyeen has kept in touch with him from the next life. He runs the estate, and has a private retreat where he communicates with her spirit.

Jan, jeune femme majeure vit seule avec son père, Stephen, un grand avocat miné par l'alcoolisme. Le père et la fille sont extrêmement attachés l'un à l'autre. Stephen a élevé sa fille dans un esprit de liberté, partant du principe qu'elle doit faire ses expériences elle-même et en tirer les leçons, ce genre de comportement place Stephen et Jan en porte à faux vis-à-vis du reste de leur famille. Stephen doit défendre Ace Wilfong un gangster accusé de meurtre et qui n'a que peu de chance d'échapper à la potence. Dans les coulisses du procès, Wilfong est présenté à Jan et les deux jeunes gens ne sont pas insensibles l'un à l'autre. Pendant que le procès se termine Jan rend visite à sa grand-mère qui fête ses 100 ans. au cours de la réception Dwight annonce qu'il a l'intention de se fiancer avec Jan. Stephen qui a réussi à innocenter Wilfong la rejoint un peu plus tard en compagnie de ce dernier. La famille fait alors comprendre à Wilfong qui n'est pas le bienvenu. Cette attitude choque Jan qui s'en va avec lui.

Victor Varconi is a Mexican bandit who brazenly flaunts his ventures until the people of El Paramo demand that something be done about it. Charles Judles, the Mexican sheriff, offers a large reward for the capture of Varconi. Meanwhile, a pair of lovers, played by Fay Wray and Don Alvarado are disappointed when Wray's father Alvarado request to marry his daughter. Wray's father has his eye on a wealthy gringo, played by Robert Elliott, and wants his daughter to marry him. When Alvarado hears about the large reward for Varconi he sets out for the bandit in the hopes of getting the money so that he can be wealthy enough to please her father and marry Wray. Judles decides to light bonfires at points where the bandit is seen in the hopes of capturing him. When Varconi shows up at Wray hacienda to pay homage to her, she, at first, lights a bonfire. She subsequently changes her mind and hides Varconi from the soldiers when they arrive. At daybreak, Alvarado captures Varconi, in the hopes of getting the reward money. He turns him in and gets the reward money and prepares for the wedding. Varconi soon escapes from prison, to the embarrassment of Judles. At this point Elliot asks Varconi to perform a favor which he had promised him on a previous occasion. Elliot tells Varconi to break up the wedding so that he can marry Wray himself. Immediately after Wray is married by force she retires to her room. A gunshot is then heard. Wray returns to the party where Varconi informs her that she is now a widow and is free to marry Alvarado.
