Le mercredi des Cendres... Un jour de pénitence et de rédemption pour les Catholiques. En 1983, dans le West Side de New York, Francis Sullivan, le gérant d'un bar, cherche à oublier son passé de violent activiste au sein d'un gang irlandais. Il trouve une forme d'équilibre entre Murph, son ami barman, le Père Mahoney, le prêtre auquel il doit son salut, et Grace, la veuve de Sean, son jeune frère porté disparu, dont il est secrètement amoureux. Ce mercredi des cendres est également une date anniversaire : celle d'une tuerie : Sean, l'innocent de la famille, a abattu ce jour-là trois hommes venus éliminer Francis. Quelques jours plus tard, le bras de Sean flottait sur la East River et Francis renonçait à l'univers de violence qu'il avait fait sien. Une rumeur commence à se répandre en ville : Sean y aurait été aperçu. Les esprits s'échauffent et une traque s'organise autour de lui.

The film compiles three stories, each named for part of the main title. The first, "Fe" (faith), is the story of a woman who travels to a distant town seeking a miracle to save her husband from disease. On the journey she is raped by fellow pilgrims; returning home she finds that the miracle has taken place and her husband is well. She vows to make the pilgrimage again the next year. The second story, "Esperanza" (Hope), concerns a man who consents to be nailed to a cross as part of "JesusChrist" freak show, hoping to help his mother. Unfortunately he is unable to afford the silver nails that would have helped him avoid infection. The final story, "Caridad" (Charity), stars Katy Jurado as a humble woman facing a lack of charity from those in authority. She comes into conflict with her son over a childish fight, and her husband is killed.

L’action se déroule à Tolède. À la mort de ses parents, Tristana est recueillie par son oncle, don Lope Garrido. Il la séduit et elle devient sa maîtresse de l’âge de 19 ans à 21 ans mais, celle qu’il a considérée comme sa fille et sa femme demande alors à étudier la musique et l’art pour devenir indépendante. Elle rencontre le jeune peintre Horacio Díaz, en tombe amoureuse et finit par quitter Tolède pour aller vivre avec lui à Madrid.

Le Père Nazario est un prêtre d'origine espagnole qui exerce son ministère pastoral au Mexique au début du XX siècle sous le régime maçonnique de Porfirio Diaz. Ce prêtre vit les valeurs évangéliques telles qu'enseignées et vécues par Jésus lui-même: un homme libre, engagé, compatissant et proche des gens. Ses paroissiens sont les pauvres qui vivent à proximité. Mais en essayant de protéger une prostituée qui a commis un meurtre, puis incendié le lieu du crime, il doit fuir, poursuivi par la justice. Il se fait embaucher sur un chantier acceptant pour seul salaire un peu de nourriture, ce qui provoque la colère des autres ouvriers. Dans un village, il visite une gamine déclarée mourante. Celle-ci guérit. Les gens crient au miracle, mais quand dans un village où les habitants sont atteints de la peste, il veut donner les derniers sacrements à une mourante, il se fait éconduire. Rattrapé par la police, maltraité par ses compagnons d'infortune, le doute l’envahit.

The story takes place in Cuba in 1850, in the era of the Black slave trade. In a sugar cane plantation, Captain Jorge (Ramón Gay) and his wife, Beatriz (Rosa Elena Durgel) live happily: are expecting a child, and their slaves live quiet and at peace with them. But one night, as the full moon appears, the sound of drums rises in the air. Yambao (Ninón Sevilla), the granddaughter of a witch supposed murdered 15 years ago named Caridad (Fedora Capdevila), has reappeared. The plantation slaves begin to fear. Her grandmother was killed by them due to black magic and curses that fell on the plantation thanks to her. Yambao's arrival coincides with a new outbreak of black vomit, not appearing on the plantation for decades, and all attributed the situation to the black magic of the girl. Yambao it's not really bad, but Caridad, who actually survived her assassination attempt, is the one who fills her heart with hatred and revenge. Jorge stays out of the traditions and customs of his slaves, but when he discovers that these want to sacrifice the girl, decides to intervene. Jorge saves Yambao, who swears eternal gratitude. But the girl starts to fall for him. Her grandmother decided to take advantage of this feeling from her revenge. Yambao decides to perform a magic ritual of Santeria over Jorge to make him love her. Her magic spell coincides with the contagion of Jorge of the epidemic plague. The doctors did not give hopes to Jorge. Yambao decides to intervene and offered her to cure him in gratitude for saving her life. The contact with Jorge, rooted even more her feelings. When Jorge manages to save himself from danger, he begins to feel the desire to be near of Yambao, which suggests that the spell has worked. For several weeks Jorge is delivered with passion for Yambao, forgetting his wife, his plantation and all his duties. However, when Jorge is informed that his wife is about to give birth, he runs to her side, and when his child born, his mind is clear and decides to return to his family. Yambao seeks revenge, and advised by Caridad decides to kill the wife and the son of Jorge. Fortunately, when about to consummate the crime, her grandmother, Caridad, is discovered by the foreman of the plantation, who kills her with a machete. Yambao flees in horror, promising not to cause any damage. The witch Caridad is the subject of a funeral ceremony with exotic rituals. At the end of the ritual, Yambao decides to end her own life by jumping off a cliff, to the astonishment of Jorge.

The Rumba dancer and singer Aurora (Ninón Sevilla), is sentenced to two years in prison for her part in a robbery with her boyfriend, the pimp "El Rizos" (Rodolfo Acosta). Once out of prison, Aurora and "El Rizos" decide to take revenge of the respectable judge Alejandro Luque (Fernando Soler), responsible for sending her to the prison. Fate reunites Aurora and the judge, and she decides to use all her feminine wiles to seduce him. Without knowing the trap, the judge falls under the spell of the evil woman, forgetting everything most important to him: his family and his profession. The judge degenerates to the point of kill and steal to be near her. His son Raul Luque (Ruben Rojo), begins investigating the situation, and like his father, falls in love to the perverse woman.
