Olga Guillot est une chanteuse cubaine de boléros née le 9 octobre 1922 à Santiago de Cuba et décédée le 12 juillet 2010 à Miami.

Biographie

Elle est partie vivre très jeune à La Havane et avec sa sœur Ana Luisa, elles forment le duo Hermanitas Guillot, et se produisent à la radio dans l'émission La Corte Suprema del Arte.

En 1938 elle suit des cours avec la soprano Hortensia Cohalla et le chanteur Mariano Meléndez.

Au début des années 1940, elle est choriste du cuarteto Siboney, dirigé par Isolina Carrillo .

Le pianiste du groupe, Facundo Rivero, lance sa carrière solo en 1945, au Zombie Club.

L'année suivante elle connait un grand succès avec son adaptation en espagnol de Stormy Weather (l'original a été interprété par de nombreux artistes tels que Billie Holiday).
Elle est désignée comme la révélation de l'année par l'association des critiques cubains.

Miguelito Valdez l'emmène à New York où elle enregistre sur le label Decca.

En 1948, le ténor René Cabell l'emmène au Mexique, où elle tourne dans La venus de fuego, avec Meche Barba et enregistre avec l'orchestre de Gonzalo Curiel.


En 1952 et 1953 elle entame une tournée en Amérique latine et enregistre avec le pianiste-compositeur Juan Bruno Terraza.

En 1954, elle signe sur le label Puchito et enregistre Miénteme, du mexicain Chamaco Domínguez.

De 1954 à 1956, l'Unión de Crónica Tele-Radia la désigne « plus belle voix de la chanson cubaine ».

En 1957 elle revient au Mexique et interprète le boléro Tú me acostumbraste de Frank Domínguez.

Elle enregistre sur le label Musart avec le maestro José Sabre Marroquín.

En 1958 elle entame une tournée en Europe et donne un concert au casino du Palm Beach à Cannes, en France.

En 1961, elle reçoit un disque d'argent.

En 1963, l'Académie des Arts John F. Kennedy d'Hollywood lui remet la Palme d'Or de la meilleure chanteuse de boléro d'Amérique latine.


Le 31 octobre 1964 elle est la première artiste hispanophone à donner un concert au Carnegie Hall à New York.

Avec Los Panchos elle triomphe en Espagne.

Son interprétatio d'Adoro d'Armando Manzanero est un succès mondial.

Avec Me muero, me muero composée par la mexicaine Lolita de la Colina , elle est la pionnière de la chanson érotique.

Elle a joué dans seize films (dont le documentaire de 1964 sur la musique cubaine, Nosotros, la música où elle chantait en duo avec Bola de Nieve), a reçu un prix ACE et elle a enregistré plus de soixante albums, dont vingt disques d'or, dix disques de platine et un disque de diamant.

Plusieurs rues portent son nom de par le monde.

Elle a interprété avec passion des chansons telles que Tú me acostumbraste, Miénteme, A gloria eres tú
et des chansons d'Agustín Lara et de José Alfredo Jiménez, Lola Beltrán, José Antonio Méndez, etc.

On la surnomme la mère ou la reine du boléro.

Pour avoir critiqué le régime de Fidel Castro, ses chansons ne passent pas à la radio cubaine.

Elle résidait au Mexique ou à Miami.

En 2000 elle signe avec le label Warner Music. Elle décède le 12 juillet 2010 à Miami.

The story takes place in Cuba in 1850, in the era of the Black slave trade. In a sugar cane plantation, Captain Jorge (Ramón Gay) and his wife, Beatriz (Rosa Elena Durgel) live happily: are expecting a child, and their slaves live quiet and at peace with them. But one night, as the full moon appears, the sound of drums rises in the air. Yambao (Ninón Sevilla), the granddaughter of a witch supposed murdered 15 years ago named Caridad (Fedora Capdevila), has reappeared. The plantation slaves begin to fear. Her grandmother was killed by them due to black magic and curses that fell on the plantation thanks to her. Yambao's arrival coincides with a new outbreak of black vomit, not appearing on the plantation for decades, and all attributed the situation to the black magic of the girl. Yambao it's not really bad, but Caridad, who actually survived her assassination attempt, is the one who fills her heart with hatred and revenge. Jorge stays out of the traditions and customs of his slaves, but when he discovers that these want to sacrifice the girl, decides to intervene. Jorge saves Yambao, who swears eternal gratitude. But the girl starts to fall for him. Her grandmother decided to take advantage of this feeling from her revenge. Yambao decides to perform a magic ritual of Santeria over Jorge to make him love her. Her magic spell coincides with the contagion of Jorge of the epidemic plague. The doctors did not give hopes to Jorge. Yambao decides to intervene and offered her to cure him in gratitude for saving her life. The contact with Jorge, rooted even more her feelings. When Jorge manages to save himself from danger, he begins to feel the desire to be near of Yambao, which suggests that the spell has worked. For several weeks Jorge is delivered with passion for Yambao, forgetting his wife, his plantation and all his duties. However, when Jorge is informed that his wife is about to give birth, he runs to her side, and when his child born, his mind is clear and decides to return to his family. Yambao seeks revenge, and advised by Caridad decides to kill the wife and the son of Jorge. Fortunately, when about to consummate the crime, her grandmother, Caridad, is discovered by the foreman of the plantation, who kills her with a machete. Yambao flees in horror, promising not to cause any damage. The witch Caridad is the subject of a funeral ceremony with exotic rituals. At the end of the ritual, Yambao decides to end her own life by jumping off a cliff, to the astonishment of Jorge.
