Philo est à Vienne travaillant pour le gouvernement des États-Unis pour voir si Archer Coe vend des dessins d'avions à des puissances étrangères. Il saisit les plans avec la signature Archer, mais est capturé par la police avant qu'il ne puisse échapper. Déporté, il revient à l'Amérique et des plans pour faire face à Archer, mais Archer est retrouvé mort dans sa chambre fermée à clé avec un fusil à la main. Bien qu'il ressemble à un suicide, Vance sait mieux et le coroner estime que Archer a été tué, frappé avec un objet contondant et poignardée - qui fait du suicide improbable. Mais Vance est sur l'affaire et cherche à voir si les secrets du gouvernement ont été vendus et qui a assassiné Coe. Ceci est un remake de « The Assassiner Kennel Case » à l'aide des dessins d'avions et d'espionnage au lieu de la porcelaine chinoise et des spectacles de chiens.

Society swell and dilettante detective Philo Vance investigates a number of murders, beginning with the apparent suicide of a jockey during a "gentleman's race", which is followed by the sudden collapse of his father, Dr. Garden, supposedly from the shock of his son's death. Then, Edgar Lowe Hammle, who seems to be at the center of much of the intriguing going on in his mansion, is shot dead. At first suicide is suspected, until Vance notices that there's no powder burns on the body. From the choice of the weapon used, Vance suspects that one of the women involved is the murderer, but when questioned each of them tries to throw suspicion on one of the others.

Gentleman detective Philo Vance (Paul Lukas) begins an investigation when he receives an anonymous letter stating that society man Lynn Llewellyn (Donald Cook) will be in danger when he appears at the casino owned by his uncle, Kinkaid (Arthur Byron). Vance visits the Llewellyn estate, which is run by Mrs. Priscilla Kinkaid-Llewellyn (Alison Skipworth), the matriarch of the household, and stumbles into one of the family's many quarrels. At the end of the bitter quarrel, which involves Mrs. Llewellyn's son Lynn and his wife Virginia (Louise Henry), Virginia announces that she has decided to leave the house and go to Chicago. During the tiff, Vance and Doris (Rosalind Russell), Mrs. Llewellyn's secretary, are introduced to each other and Doris immediately takes a liking to Vance.

Charles Spotswoode's son Jimmy became involved with "the Canary", a conniving star showgirl. Fortunately, Jimmy has regained his senses and reconciled with Alyce LaFosse. However, the Canary is determined to force Jimmy to marry her so she can join the social elite, threatening to reveal that Jimmy was embezzling from his father. She turns down the elder Spotswoode's offer of money to leave Jimmy alone. She also telephones two men she has been blackmailing, Cleaver and Mannix, and demands one final generous gift from each of them by the next day. She also informs "creepy" admirer Dr. Lindquist. Her ex-husband Tony Sheel eavesdrops and wants half, but she refuses to give him anything, even after he hits her. Cleaver, Mannix and Lindquist are all shown lurking about her apartment building late that night.
