The Stronger Vow is a 1919 American silent melodrama film directed by Reginald Barker and distributed by Samuel Goldwyn. Its survival status is classified as unknown, which suggests that it is a lost film.

Synopsis

As described in a film magazine, the film deals with the "oath of blood" Dolores de Cordova (Farrar) takes when her brother is murdered during a carnival to kill the murderer with her own hand and the vow she later takes upon marrying Juan Estudillo (Sills). Dolores believes her cousin Pedro Toral (Santschi), who is the real murder, when he accuses Juan just after the wedding dinner, because there long had been a feud between the two Spanish families. Pedro insists that she keep her oath of blood and take revenge with her own hand. Pedro takes Dolores from the church where she was praying and takes her to a den of Apaches, whose leader he has become. Pedro sets a trap for the husband, but Juan is connected with the secret police, and arranges for a raid on the Apache den. Juan first goes there alone, and is captured and bound. Pedro demands that Dolores now keep her oath. At this moment the den is raided, and Pedro is killed by a man whom he had wronged and had also confessed in a moment of bravado of being the murderer. This clears Juan of the false accusation and allows Dolores to keep the stronger vow made at the alter.

As described in a film magazine, Muriel Barnes (Farrar) is the loving and happy wife of conservative New Yorker Judson Barnes (Sills) and the devoted mother of a child (Smith), when a promoter of a fake mining enterprise, Frank Craftley (Truesdell), gains social access to her home. Craftley has never met her before, but his side partner Jack McGoff (Santschi) has a photograph of Muriel from her previous life in Alaska under the name Cora Lamont. McGoff had deceived her by marrying her although he already had a living wife. He then forced her into the job as a dance hall girl. She escaped by shooting him in self-defense and then fleeing Alaska. Without knowing these details but guessing some general circumstances, Craftley works on her fears until she induces her husband to go out West to inspect the salted claim. McGoff stays behind and visits Muriel's home at night, and she permits him to enter her boudoir. Knowing that a policeman is courting one of the servants on the floor below, she scatters some jewels to give the appearance of a robbery, and, when McGoff attempts to embrace her, screams for help. Fleeing arrest, McGoff shoots at the policeman, and is later killed in the resulting scrimmage. His death ends the shadows in Muriel's life.

The film focuses on Andrée Grange, the daughter of a local cafe owner. Meanwhile, her father is attacked in his cabin by Barode Dukane. Andrée, who has witnessed the struggle, feels that she is responsible for the following death of Barode. Her father helps her flee town by ship and O'Hara is assigned to locate and arrest her. He tracks her down, but is followed by Tempest. Tempest tries to help her, but they are caught in the rapids. O'Hara eventually comes to the rescue, saving Tempest and Andrée's lives. In the end, her innocence is proven and Tempest breaks the engagement, realizing that his fiancée is in love with O'Hara.

Lola Montrose vit maritalement avec l'homme qu'elle aime, le chirurgien John Hampton. Se lassant de cette situation, Hampton dit à Lola qu'il veut se marier avec une femme, Paula Chester, qui exercera une bonne influence sur son fils Irwin. Lola supplie Hampton de l'épouser et lui confesse qu'elle aussi a un fils, David, qu'elle a confié à une institution religieuse, mais Hampton continue à lui dire qu'il veut privilégier l'avenir de son propre fils. Pour se venger, Lola décide de se marier avec Irwin. Après l'avoir saoulé, Lola l'emmène à l'église mais le prêtre refuse de les marier. Trop soûl pour se rendre compte que le mariage n'a pas eu lieu, Irwin emmène Lola chez lui et la présente comme son épouse. Plus tard, le fils de Lola a un accident et le docteur Hampton le sauve. Elle se repent alors et avoue que ce mariage est factice. Réalisant ses propres erreurs, Hampton accepte de s'occuper de Lola et de son fils.
