Ajouter à une liste de filmsSleep est un film américain en noir et blanc réalisé par Andy Warhol de 1964 qui consiste en un montage de segments représentant le poète John Giorno dormant. Le film était initialement prévu pour durer huit heures, soit la durée d'une nuit de sommeil normale, et donne l'illusion d'un plan séquence, alors qu'on peut voir à la projection que certains passages reviennent plusieurs fois. Le montage final dure cinq heures et 21 minutes (321 minutes) lorsque projeté à 16 images par seconde et 4 h 45 projeté à 18 images par seconde.
Le tournage eut lieu en juillet 1963 dans l'appartement de Giorno, alors amant d'Andy Warhol. Warhol filme à l'aide d'une caméra Bolex en format 16 mm (bobines noir et blanc de 30 m) des plans fixes de son modèle dans des axes de prise de vue différents, ces plans muets étant ensuite dupliqués au montage.
La première eut lieu à New York au Gramercy Arts Theater le 17 janvier 1964. D'après le New York Post, seuls neuf spectateurs étaient présents, deux ont quitté la salle dès la première heure de projection.
Le film était une des premières expérimentations de Warhol dans la réalisation cinématographique, et a été créé comme un « anti-film ». Warhol étendra cette technique à son film suivant, Empire, d'une durée de 8 heures.

The film begins with a totally white screen and as the sun sets, the image of the Empire State Building emerges. The floodlights on its exterior come on, the building's lights flicker on and off for the next 6½ hours, then the floodlights go off again in the next to the last reel so that the remainder of the film takes place in nearly total darkness. The movie was filmed with Andy Warhol directing and filmmaker Jonas Mekas working as cinematographer. During three of the reel changes, filming recommenced before the lights in the filming room were switched off, making the faces of Warhol and Mekas momentarily visible in the reflection of the window each time.

The concept of Poor Little Rich Girl is a day in the life of socialite Edie Sedgwick. Warhol and Gerard Malanga began shooting in March 1965 in Sedgwick's posh New York City apartment. After initial filming and processing, the reels were found to be out of focus due to a faulty camera lens. Warhol then reshot footage, adding it to the original, out-of-focus first reel footage. The first reel depicts an out-of-focus Sedgwick waking up, ordering coffee and orange juice, smoking cigarettes and marijuana, exercising, taking pills and putting on makeup in silence. The only noise is that of an Everly Brothers record playing continuously in the background.

The film begins with a close up of Ondine, with an off screen voice saying that the film will follow the "Oswald model on television". The voice adds that "First it happened, then it was played back in tape, and then it was played back in slow motion."
