Kunwara Baap (Bachelor Father) is a 1942 Hindi comedy film directed by Kishore Sahu. The film was the debut directorial venture for Sahu, who directed it for the debutant producer N. R. Acharya. Acharya had just started his production company Acharya Arts Productions. The story was written by Kishore Sahu who went on to write and direct films like Kali Ghata, Mayurpankh and others. The music direction was by Ramchandra Pal. The film had Kishore Sahu starring as the bachelor father with co-stars Protima Dasgupta, Anjali Devi, Nana Palsikar, Amritlal Nagar, and Moni Chatterjee.

It was one of the winners for the BFJA - Best Indian Films Award for best film for 1943.

Prannath finds an infant abandoned in his car on his engagement day. The finding leads to several comedic situations in the film. The film was inspired by Bachelor Mother (1939), directed by Garson Kanin and starring Ginger Rogers. The story was reversed in Kunwara Baap, with the hero getting landed with the child.

Synopsis

Prannath (Kishore Sahu) goes to the jeweller’s to buy a ring for his to-be fiancée. While he is in the store, an unwed mother leaves her infant in the back of Prannath’s car. When he comes out he realises he’s stuck with the baby much to his discomfiture as his betrothed refuses to believe his story. The situation gives rise to several funny sequences till the villainous father of the child admits to being the real father and agrees to marry the mother of the abandoned child.

Emperor Ashoka's beloved wife, Asandhimitra, mother of Kunal, is dead and Ashoka is grief-stricken. Kunal is much loved by his step-mother, Kuruvaki. He is loved and admired by all in the kingdom and is Ashoka's favourite son. Over a period of time Ashoka overcomes his grief and marries a much younger, Tishyarakshita, daughter of a chieftain. Somdev, Ashoka's Prime Minister has opposed the alliance and is frequently humiliated by Tishya. When Tishya sees Kunal, she falls in love with him in spite of him having a wife, Kanchanmala, and a young son. Tishya is strongly rebuffed by Kunal. An angry Tishya has him accused of murder and put in the dungeon. She tells the guards to blind his eyes. Ashoka, enamoured of Tishya, is unable to see through her plotting. He falls ill and remains largely unaware of most incidents. Kurvaki, unable to see Kunal's plight, helps him escape. Kunal gets the help of the townspeople of Pataliputra and marches to the palace. Ashoka, on being told who is at the gates of the palace, calls for a durbar meeting. When he hears the entire story, his sense of fair play, his impartial justice, and remorse at his son's blinding help him mete out a strict punishment to Tishya, condemning her to be burnt.

Anand (Kishore Sahu) lives in Nainital with his mother (Pratima Devi). They meet the Mathur family who have recently arrived there for holidays. An elderly lady Rashmi (Kamini Kaushal), starts telling her story to a newly married couple she's giving shelter to as their car has broken down. The story in flashback, is set twenty years earlier. The wealthy landowner, Zamindar Mansingh, is oppressive and demanding of the people in his state. Rashmi and her family have just arrived in Gangapur as guests of Mansingh. Rashmi is captured by the dreaded dacoit Black Bandit. The Bandit releases Rashmi but keeps her jewellery. She notices a mark on the bandit's hand, which is also present on Pratap's hand. Pratap is the oldest son of Mansingh, and Rashmi realises that he's the bandit. Pratap also suffers from a heart problem unknown to the others. It's soon revealed that Pratap is the bandit and his father asks him to leave the house. When Pratap has a heart attack, his father relents and hands over the running of the property to him. Rashmi stays by his side and they get married. The flashback ends with the couple asking about Pratap's fate. Pratap is shown opening the gate of the house, returning from a fishing trip, having managed to survive the doctor's prognosis given twenty years back.

Chandan is rushing to his home-town from Bombay to be beside his long-ailing father, Lala Baijnath, whose illness has relapsed. Chandan's college friend, Prakash (Manoj Kumar) accompanies him. Reaching the outskirts of the town, Prakash is shocked to learn that the mansion he is visiting is haunted and Lala Bahinath, is suspected by the town of having murdered a beautiful young woman on the day of a full moon. It is believed that the spirit of the murdered woman, Rani haunts the mansion to this day. Prakash is curious and intrigued. Prakash meets Chandan's sisters, Jyoti and Nandini but before a love triangle acquires any dimensions, the unexpected happens. Prakash, in the dead of the night, begins to hear a woman's voice singing and soon Prakash is captivated by the charms of an elusive spirit, Rani. With Lalaji's nurse murdered and every relative wanting a stake in the property, things take a dark turn where no one can be trusted and everyone is a suspect. Curious Prakash determined to resolve the mystery of the mansion and start an investigation on its own. He persuades Chandan to show him the closed quarters of Rani, which are forbidden to enter by any one after her death twelve years ago, by orders of Lala Baijnath. After examining the room they returned. Prakash continue to hear mysterious sounds in night from his bedroom. He follows an woman in white clothing to no avail. Meanwhile Chandan and Prakash camp mates visits the mansion on earlier invitation by Chandan. One of girls dares Praksh to bring out her Sandal from nearby well after hearing his swimming skills from others, to add further excitement Nandini dumps her expensive bangles to well and challenges Prakash to bring it out and keep the same as reward. Without wasting any time Prakash jumps into the well, and disappeared from sight to dismay of onlookers. When he reappears after some time he holds the corpse of murdered nurse. Meanwhile mysterious woman in white clothing continue to bother Prakash, he felt like nervous breakdown. As the time passes the day of full moon arrives again, warned by gardener and family doctor all are asked to stay vigilant to face untowardly incident. In midnight, a silhouette with a knife in her hand approaches sleeping Lala Baijnath and stabs his blanket covered body. In meantime alert Prakash catches the murderer red handed, who is non other than Nandini. She tried to put blame the on Prakash but Lala Baijnath, as put on sleep somewhere near unusual to deceit the murderer recovers from his paralysis due to further shock, reveals to all that Nandini was daughter of Rani and suffering from same mental disease as her mother, an illness which attacks occurs on full moon days which costs her life twelve years ago as she fallen from upstairs,. Lala reveals further that on earlier attack on him by her, she accidentally killed nurse later pushing nurse to well from window and causing paralysis to him by shock. As everyone was in state of shock, doctor ensures that she will be treated to his full capacity as Nandini sings the same haunted song and marches ahead towards mansions balcony.
