Dilip Kumar (hindi : दिलीप कुमार ; ourdou : دِلِیپ کُمار), né le 11 décembre 1922 à Peshawar, est un des plus grands acteurs indiens. Admiré par le public et encensé par la critique, il a tourné dans soixante films tout au long d'une carrière longue de plus de cinquante ans.

Débutant en 1944, Dilip Kumar joue dans plusieurs des plus grands succès du cinéma commercial indien des années 1940 à 1980. Il est le premier acteur à recevoir le Filmfare Award du Meilleur acteur et reste le comédien le plus primé dans cette catégorie avec Shahrukh Khan avec huit récompenses. Ses interprétations sont considérées comme des archétypes du romantisme dans le cinéma indien. Cependant, il interprète des rôles fort variés dans des films tels que Andaz, Mangala, fille des Indes, Devdas, Azaad, Mughal-E-Azam ou encore Ganga Jamuna. Dans les années 1970 les propositions se font plus rares mais il s'impose de nouveau en 1981 avec Kranti puis Shakti et Karma, tournant son dernier film, Qila, en 1998.

Biographie

De son vrai nom mohammed Yusuf Sarwar Khan, Dilip Kumar est né dans le bazaar de Peshawar (Raj britannique, actuellement au Pakistan) dans une famille d'origine afghane de douze enfants. Son père, Lala Ghulam Sarwar, est un marchand de fruits, propriétaire de vastes vergers à Peshawar et au Maharashtra. Dans les années 1930, la famille s'établit à Bombay et au début des années 1940 Dilip Kumar s'installe à Pune où il tient un restaurant pour l'armée britannique puis un magasin de fruits secs.

On prête à Dilip Kumar de nombreuses aventures avec ses partenaires féminines et en particulier avec Madhubala. Mais la famille de celle-ci s'oppose à leur mariage, l'actrice étant sa seule source de revenu. Le père de l'actrice lui interdit de jouer avec Dilip Kumar dans Naya Daur (1957) ce qui conduit le producteur à lui intenter un procès au cours duquel l'acteur témoigne contre son ex bien-aimée. Cette situation rend leur coopération difficile sur le tournage de Mughal-E-Azam, commencé avant le litige, où ils jouent des amants passionnés.

En 1966, Dilip Kumar épouse l'actrice et "reine de beauté" Saira Banu, alors qu'il est âgé de 44 ans et qu'elle n'en a que 22. Malgré les potins de la presse, leur union est une des plus durables de Bollywood, résistant à un bref second mariage de l'acteur avec Asma, sans que le premier n'ait été rompu.

Le jeune frère de Dilip Kumar, Nasir Khan, également acteur, est marié à l'actrice Begum Para avec laquelle il a un fils, Ayub Khan, qui lui aussi est acteur.

Outre ses efforts pour le rapprochement des peuples indien et pakistanais et ses interventions dans des œuvres charitables, Dilip Kumar a été membre du Rajya Sabha dans les rangs du Parti du Congrès.

A cruel and evil landowner Jaganath Singh (Dilip Kumar) is murdered and his twin brother Amarnath Singh (also Dilip Kumar) decides to investigate. He finds the list of suspects is endless. The prime suspects are Jaganath's son Amar (Mukul Dev), Jaganath's abused wife Suman (Smita Jaykar) and a woman named Yamini (Rekha) who claims she was raped by Jaganath. Eventually Jaganath's son Amar confesses to killing his father. He reveals that on the night of his father's death he accidentally shot him while trying to fight him off when Jagannath held Amar and his mother at gunpoint. Soon after the list of suspects grow after it is discovered that Jaganath's had many more enemies who could have killed him including landowner Mangal Singh (Gulshan Grover) and even Jaganath's own brother Amarnath who doesn't seem to have got on well with Jaganath himself in the past.

Bhushannath 'Dharmendra' Bhadbhole (Kader Khan) is a corrupt Minister of Fisheries. His son, Kailash (Gulshan Grover), and Kabza Kanhaiyalal (Anupam Kher) rape and kill Jagatpratap's maid/servant and also kill Ravi's friend. Instead of being convicted for this crime, they are acquitted because they gave fake alibis. Ravi decides to give these criminals the punishment they deserve. As Ravi knows this will cause a conflict with his father, he decides to leave home. He then becomes a police inspector. This does not heal the father-son bond as he still has different ideas about the meaning of justice. After deliberating on the statement that "the law is for human beings but not for monsters", the father finally agrees to join his son in his fight against the corrupt minister.

The film takes place in the 19th Century British India and is the story of the fight for independence from the British between 1825 to 1875. Sentenced to death, he escapes and forms a group of revolutionaries who have only one goal - to drive the British out of India. This group multiplies into several armies, all united with one slogan - an Independent India, also known as Kranti.

Kailash (Dilip Kumar) loses his eyesight after a car accident. His wife gives birth to twin boys, one of them blind. Before his wife gains consciousness, he asks the doctor to get rid of the blind baby, because he doesn't want his son to live a life where he can't see at all. The doctor's wife leaves the blind baby in a Hindu temple, where he is discovered by the temple priest who raises the boy, now called Bholenath (Dilip Kumar). Kailash feels guilty about what he did to the blind baby and confesses it to his wife several years later, who becomes so distraught that she dies. Kailash raises his other son Sanjay (Dilip Kumar), who turns into a spoiled rich boy. Although Sanjay is engaged to Sonia (Leena Chandavarkar), he continues to have an affair with Lucy (Helen), who has a rich dangerous boyfriend Grasco (Madan Puri). Sonia's greedy brother Kunwal (Prem Chopra) agrees to marry a country girl Tara (Saira Banu) but wants a Rs. 300,000 dowry. She doesn't want to marry him, because she is in love with Bholenath, even though he is poor and blind. Bholenath thinks that his status is beneath hers and that she deserves a rich suitor and steals the money from the Hindu temple to give to Kunwal for her dowry. His pet snake tries to stop him from giving the money by biting him. He regains his sight and vows to the temple priest(Nazir Hussain) and Tara to bring the money back from Kunwal. Once he reaches the city, people mistook him for Sanjay, who in turn, is hiding out with Lucy after she leaves Grasco along with Rs. 15,000,000. She is found dead with the money missing. Sanjay is the suspect. The film is resolved with the real culprit getting caught, and the two brothers reunited with their father, and then marrying their sweethearts.
