Synopsis
Emmené en 1931 par son père depuis Detroit où ils vivaient en immigrés vers l'URSS pour soutenir l'industrie soviétique, Victor, athlète remarqué, refuse la citoyenneté russe et se fait persécuter par les autorités staliniennes. Ritter plays Ed Chandler, a father who is fired from his job for taking time off to tend to his 16 year daughter Missy (Chlumsky), who is battling cancer. Rather than accepting his dismissal, Ed decides to fight back. With the help of a United States senator, he lobbies the United States Congress and is the stimulus to passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act. Because Missy's cancer is terminal, she is visited by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and she wishes to go to the White House and visit the Oval Office and hopefully see President Bill Clinton himself. Although Make-A-Wish is not so sure if they can grant her wish, in the end she does in fact get to visit the Oval Office and meet President Clinton himself in a surprise cameo appearance.

Cette histoire romantique est racontée du point de vue des enfants de l'histoire, les adultes ne jouant que des rôles secondaires. Daniel Lattimer (Mark Lester) se lie d'amitié avec Ornshaw (Jack Wild), un garçon perturbateur. Un jour, Daniel tombe amoureux de Melody Perkins (Tracy Hide) et ils annoncent à leurs parents leur intention de se marier, non pas à l'avenir, mais dès maintenant. Cependant, les adultes, les parents comme les professeurs, ne les prennent pas au sérieux. Ornshaw non plus car il pense que Melody lui vole son ami. Plus tard cependant, Ornshaw et leurs autres camarades aident le jeune couple. Ils se réunissent dans une voie ferrée désaffectée pour marier le couple, mais les professeurs les suivent et essaient de les attraper. Les enfants leur échappent et font exploser une voiture. Melody et Daniel, aidés par Ornshaw, s'enfuient par draisine sur les rails.

Janie Johnson (Kellie Martin) is 16 and living a happy life.
