Gopalakrishnan. The film stars S. S. Rajendran, C. R. Vijayakumari, M. R. Radha and Sowcar Janaki in lead roles. The film had musical score by K. V. Mahadevan. Subbarao later remade the film in Telugu as Manchi Manasulu (1962).
The film was released on July 29, 1961 with final reel length of 4,501 metres (14,767 ft) and became a commercial success at box office. The film received Certificate of Merit for Third Best Feature Film at 9th National Film Awards.

Raja (M.G.R), a champion jockey leads a very happy and disciplined life. Raja meets Jeeva (Saroja Devi), the only daughter of a very rich businessman, Bhupathi, and both fall head over heels in love with each other. Raja is an orphan. Years later, he learns of his mother and the injustice meted out to her in life. Raja vows to find his father and take revenge. Raja is overjoyed to meet his mother who he believed was dead, but his happiness is short lived, when his mother reveals that he is the son of Bhupathi.

Venkat Ramaiah (SV Rangarao) and Kanaka Durga (Suryakantham) adopted Suguna (Savithri). When they have their own child Varalakshmi, Kanaka Durga's affection towards Suguna diminishes. Vengalappa (Relangi) adopts suguna. She becomes a doctor and loves Chandram (ANR). Chandram develops Tuberculosis and forces Suguna to marry doctor Raghunath (Jaggayya). Dr. Raghunath expires in an accident. Chandram is cured of TB and returns. Suguna decides to dedicate her life to social work. She convinces Chandram to marry Varalakshmi. Kanaka Durga creates problems in the relations. Suguna corrects them.

Venu (ANR) is a very poor student and seeks to come out of hostel unable bear the expenses and shift to a lawyer Anand Rao (S.V. Rangarao)'s outhouse who gives it for free of cost. Venu has a brother who is a blacksmith and funds his studies and his daughter in their village. The lawyer's wife doesn't agree to give their room to bachelors and so lawyer insists that he says that he is married. The lawyer has a daughter Shanthi (Savitri) who falls in love with Venu. Her parents agree for their marriage. Venu completes his B.A. degree and goes to his village. His brother dies of ill-health and asks him to take care of his daughter Jaya. Jaya loves a man named Kumar (Nagabhushanam) who is very deceptive, and has a blind sister Radha (Janaki). When Venu asks Kumars' parents to get Jaya married to their son, they agree on one condition that Venu should marry their daughter. So Venu and Shanthi sacrifice their love. Venu is guilty of dumping her and doesn't like his wife. One day Shanthi comes and mitigates the situation. Janaki's brother and his wife create nuisence. Janaki becomes pregnant. To keep her away from all these problems, he takes his wife to Hampi Vijayanagar on Shanthi's advice. There Kumar who cheats a lady and kills her on a mountain. Hearing her screaming, Venu arrives there and sees the culprit and gets caught to police to save Kumar's life for the sake of his brother's daughter. Shanthi who is now a lawyer takes up his case and proves that he is innocent in the court and unveils the culprit with the help of strong evidence brought by Jaya, he becomes remorseful. The story ends with Venu and his wife lead a happy life.

Movie starts with the marriage of Radha Devi and Gopinath (Sunil Dutt and Nutan). They start on their honeymoon and has to pass across a river on a ferry boat. While they are in the middle of the river, Gopinath suddenly begins to hallucinate about whirlpool and shouts that they are going to die. Despite of the reassurances from Radha and boatman, Gopinath couldn't be calmed, so Radha orders boatman to take them to nearby shore. Relates the true meaning of friendship between two youths, Raghu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Ravi (S. S. Rajendran). Ravi leaves his hometown in Tamil Nadu and comes to Amritsar. Here, Raghu finds him in an unconscious state and takes him home. Raghu sacrifices his managerial post and gives it to Ravi. Ravi, however, does not reveal his true identity and the real reason for leaving home. As per his parents wish, Ragu sees a girl to marry. However, when Ravi sees the photograph of the girl, he asks Rghu not to marry her. A shocking truth about the girl is then revealed to Raghu.
