Charithram (translation: History) is a 1989 Malayalam thriller film starring Mammootty and Rahman in the lead roles along with Shobana, Lizy, Jagathy Sreekumar, Janardhanan, Murali, and Pappu in other pivotal roles. It is written by S. N. Swamy and directed by G. S. Vijayan in his directional debut.


The story is loosely based on the super hit Hindi movie Dhuan released in 1981 starring Mithun Chakraborty and Raakhee.

Synopsis

Philip Manavaalan (Mammootty) is the owner of a financing company in Kerala and the movie begins with his wedding preparations. After the wedding, Philip's wife, Cecily (Shobhana) is curious about Raju (Rahman), Philip's dead brother and so Philip relates the story of Raju to Cecily.

Mammootty plays Bavutty, a chauffeur in a wealthy household. He is in fact much more than a driver; he is very much part of the family. Soon after their marriage, their ego and professional jealousy started causing problems in their life. After a very short married life, Viswanathan leaves the house with their son. During his comeback their son meets Janani. Janani was trying to achieve Natyasree award in dance. Viswanathan came back to prevent this achievement. He Challenges Janani to dance to his voice. On the day of competition, Viswanathan realizes the situation and withdraws from the competition. He entrusts his son to sing instead of him. After the award, the couple rejoins.
