Après que son père, Daniel Keith, est tué dans un accident d'automobile dans un ranch de l'Ouest, Dorothy Keith tombe amoureuse du jeune Joel Gant, un mineur, et l'épouse. La concession de Gant est saisie par le cousin de Dorothy, Ben, qui travaille pour le compte d'une société d'exploitation, et le couple passe des années dans la pauvreté. Gant fait alors de la contrebande et se met à boire, pendant que Dorothy fait des lessives pour entretenir le ménage et la nièce de Gant, Crissy. Rhodes, un avocat de la compagnie minière, qui s'intéresse à Dorothy, offre du travail à Gant, mais celui-ci refuse. Un jour que Gant menace de fouetter Crissy, Dorothy le fouette durement. Gant est arrêté pour contrebande. Dorothy trouve un travail à la compagnie minière grâce à Rhodes et refuse de vivre avec son mari lorsqu'il est libéré. Plus tard, toutefois, il reprend le droit chemin et ils se retrouvent.

Rachel Stetherill (Edythe Chapman) disapproves of her daughter's choice for a husband, and therefore disowns her. After her daughter dies, Rachel refuses to help the child she has left behind. The boy is adopted by a safecracker, and soon excels at the profession. The boy grows up as Robert Ashe (Lytell), and becomes a safecracker renowned for his delicate hands and touch, hence the moniker "Ladyfingers". A lawyer, Justin Haddon (Frank Elliott), is trying to find Robert, who will will inherit his grandmother's estate if he is found. If he is not located, Rachel's ward, Enid Camden (Ora Carew), will inherit the estate, and it is Haddon's intention to marry Enid. But Robert meets Enid and falls in love with her. Haddon suspects that Robert is a thief and invites him to Rachel's home, expecting him to steal her string of pearls. The pearls disappear and the police suspect Ladyfingers, but the pearls are found and the case is dismissed. Rachel notices the resemblance between him and her son-in-law, and soon realizes that he is her grandson. When his past is revealed, Ladyfingers confesses his crimes and agrees to go to jail for two years to pay his debt to society. After his release from his prison term, he takes up farming and is happily married to Enid.

Since their college days, Desborough and Rittenshaw have pretended to live by the creed, "No God, no sin, no future life." A cloud on their relationship which rapidly assumes tragic proportions, is the intimacy between Desborough and the beautiful wife of Rittenshaw. The latter first has his eyes opened by the suffering wife of Desborough. He waits until he has definite proofs, then kills Desborough on sight at their club.
