A Gutter Magdalene is a 1916 American drama silent film directed by George Melford and written by Clinton Stagg. The film stars Fannie Ward, Jack Dean, Charles West, William Elmer, Gertrude Kellar and Ronald Bradbury. The film was released on June 4, 1916, by Paramount Pictures.

Synopsis

Maida Carrington (Fannie Ward) goes to a city with a gambler (Charles West) but runs away after she witnesses the gambler steal money from Steve Boyce (Jack Dean). The woman takes a job with the Salvation Army and after that she meets Steve again because he now has no money and needs help. They fall in love and Steve asks her to marry him, but Maida thinks she isn't a good match for him because of her past association with the gambler. She goes and finds the gambler and tries to get him to return the money to Steve. He refuses and they struggle, and Maida accidentally shoots him with his own gun. The sheriff knows about the gambler and clears her of the murder charge. After that, the woman returns the money to Steve and agrees to marry him.

As described in a film magazine, Merlin (Ward), the only daughter of a sheep rancher, is kidnapped by Sontag (Dean), who shoots her father and drives off the sheep. She is compelled to dance nightly in Sontag's saloon where she is known as Mexicali Mae. There she meets Joe Blanchard (Ford), a derelict from the east who plays the piano in order to secure enough dope to satisfy his craving. Sontag, fearing that one of his confederates has double crossed him and told about his opium smuggling operations, kills the man and places the blame on Joe. Merlin helps Joe escape, and they take up a ranch where Joe finally overcomes his desire for drugs. Joe's mother (Chapman) and fiancee (Pickford) pay a visit and Mrs. Chapman tries to buy off Merlin and have Joe return east. Merlin returns to Sontag's dance hall, and Joe follows, convinced that she no longer loves him. Merlin returns to the ranch and is about to end her own life when Joe and Sontag arrive. In the tussle that follows, Sontag is killed and Joe realizes that Merlin really loves him.

A woman named Betty (Fannie Ward) is simple and plain, her husband finds that boring and doesn't invite her out. She decides she needs to wear nicer clothes to get the attention of her husband. Suddenly she inherits a large amount of money while at the same time her husband loses all his money in a stock market crash. Her husband doesn't realize she is rich so he goes out to California to sell some of their property to raise some final money. She takes a car out to find him but she is accompanied by another man. When her husband sees this he fights with the man, and Betty's husband mistakenly thinks he kills the other man. When the police and the man who was really killed show up at the same time, Betty's husband realizes he has been acting foolishly. Betty decides to forgive him and they decide to try to give their marriage another fresh try.

The wife of a poor shepard named Sue Wells (Cleo Ridgely) is tired of being poor and takes advantage of a loophole to become owner's of her neighbor's rich estate while her neighbor is gone. However, living in the mansion doesn't make Sue happy. When their neighbor comes home to find out what they've done he kills her husband. Right before he can kill her, she wakes up and realizes it was all a dream. Her husband then walks in and tells her that he got a job as that estate's overseer, so they won't have to worry about money anymore.

A simple miner named Daniel Slade (James Neill) and his wife Mary (Edith Wynne Matthison) live in the mountains. Mary has a miscarriage and shortly after that Daniel discovers gold. The new wealth divides them; Daniel wants to join high society but Mary wants to continue living the simple life. Daniel gets frustrated and considers marrying Katherine Strickland (May Allison), but in the end he realizes he loves Mary and follows her back to the cabin. By this time he has entered politics as a governor and he persuades her to return to be the governor's lady.
