As described in a film magazine, Tom Brown (Moore), a student at Harvard University, is engaged to Evelyn Ames (Daly). Her brother has become desperately involved with Marian Thorne (Winston). In an effort to protect his fiance's brother, the stigma associated with Marian Thorne's condition rests upon Tom. Evelyn breaks her engagement. Wilton Ames (Greene) crowns his borrowing of money from Tom by stealing a blank check and forging it for $300 to get Marion out of the city so that her condition may not get known. Gerald Thorne (McGrail), brother of Marian and stoke on the Harvard crew, refuses to enter the race after he is given a spurious note from his sister saying that she is leaving the city and wants to see him. Brown is put in has place and the race is won. Following the race, Gerald confronts him and charges him with being responsible for his sister's downfall. Evelyn demands that Tom marry Marian when Wilton finally confesses that he is the man involved. With Brown shown in his true light a happy reconciliation follows.

L'université de Calvert a décidé d'améliorer son équipe de football, dans l'intention d'attirer plus de donateurs. Malgré l'opposition du directeur Phillip Sargeant, le conseil de l'université engage l'entraîneur Gore, dont les équipes ne perdent jamais mais dont les méthodes sont un peu louches. Gore fait venir trois nouveaux athlètes, Weaver, Matthews et Petrowsky, en leur offrant de l'argent et en les inscrivant à des cours faciles avec une garantie de succès à l'examen. Phil Sargeant, le fils du directeur, forme avec ces trois-là les "Quatre As". C'est un très bon joueur, mais c'est aussi un étudiant intéressé par la chimie. Pendant que Gore entraîne son équipe et répond aux journalistes, sa femme Claire se sent seule. Buck Weaver flirte avec elle, mais sans succès. Lorsque Phil ne réussit pas son examen de chimie mais est quand même reçu, il est furieux contre ce procédé malhonnête, il se querelle avec Gore et quitte l'équipe. Finalement Claire, qui croit que son mari voit d'autres femmes, accepte de dîner avec Buck. Gore les aperçoit par hasard au restaurant, en représailles il vire Buck de l'équipe et met sa femme dehors. L'équipe commence à perdre ses matches et le département chimie commence à manquer de fonds. Lors du dernier grand match, que Calvert doit absolument gagner, l'équipe est en retard de vingt points. Claire pousse Buck à jouer et Phil rejoint aussi l'équipe pour sauver son laboratoire de chimie. Les "Quatre As" sont de nouveau réunis et Calvert gagne lors du dernier quart-temps. Claire et Gore se réconcilient lorsque ce dernier promet de quitter le sport et de mieux s'occuper de Claire, mais quand une autre université lui fait une offre généreuse, c'est elle qui accepte la proposition pour lui.

The plot of the film centers around a salesman named Ron (portrayed by Ron Masak) who is trying to make a sales pitch to legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi. Ron is not very good at his job, and fumbles ineffectually through his sales pitch. Coach Lombardi takes pity on him, and spends the rest of the film teaching him his personal philosophy, known as "The Second Effort". The sport of American football is used as a metaphor, and lessons on the football field are applied to Ron's own job in sales. Many quotes and aphorisms commonly associated with Lombardi appear in the film, such as "mental toughness is the essential key to success" and "confidence is contagious, and so is the lack of it". Scenes take place in Lombardi's office and other locations around Lambeau Field, the Packers home football stadium.
