The screenplay was written by Ann Turner, based on the novel of the same name by Blanche d'Alpuget. It caused controversy in Malaysia where the Government took exception to scenes of Malays executing refugees.
Synopsis
La journaliste Judith Wilkes laisse son mari et ses deux fils à Sydney et se rend en Malaisie pour couvrir l'histoire des boat people vietnamiens. Elle devient amoureuse de Kanan et se lie d'amitié avec Lady Minou Hobday, qui tient une veillée régulière à "Turtle Beach" où les réfugiés tentent d'atterrir secrètement dans l'espoir qu'un jour ses propres enfants arriveront. Accompagnant Minou une nuit, Judith assiste à un massacre brutal par les Malais qui la pousse à exposer les horreurs des camps d'internement de Bidong.LdActeurs

In the 1930s, Teresa (Buday) is a naive young woman dealing with the oppressive attitudes of society and her father's austere ways. She has a fling with university Latin professor Jonathan Crow (Weaving). It takes her a while to figure out that he will not get serious with her.
