P. A. C. Lalitha, Parvathy and Sreenivasan in major roles. The film was a remake of the 1986 Tamil film Samsaram Adhu Minsaram directed by Visu.

The film starts with Ashoka Varma (Prathapachandran) a police officer, trying to prevent smuggling and drugs exporters. On the night he found the crucial evidence needed, he was murdered in his house. To find the murderer Kerala Home Minister (Oduvil Unnikrishnan) invites C.I.D. Ramdas aka Dasan (Mohanlal) and C.I.D. Vijayan (Sreenivasan) to Kerala.

Sukumaran, his brother Mohanan and their mother live contently in a middle-class family. Mohanan has recently married Shylaja who is employed unlike Sukumaran’s wife Kanchana. Sukumaran is a supervisor to a company named JK Constructions. Shylaja’s fortunate life with money and job makes Kanchana envious about her and Kanchana slowly starts causing problems in the family by finding unnecessary issues which affects the smooth going of a peaceful family life. Finally Sukumaran leaves their family house and starts living in a rented house as part of Kanchana’s requests. Soon Kanchana finds one or the other reasons to live in luxury which is not conducive with the economical conditions of Sukumaran who is just a supervisor in a company. However he leans for her demands like buying costly home appliances, arranging a dance master for their daughter, sending her to English medium school, buying an old car (which would be destroyed soon) etc. The huge economical demands slowly crush Sukumaran and it finally affects him in the manner of creditors demanding their money back. In order to meet the worst situations Sukumaran finally decides to cheat his employer by forgery. The authorities soon come to know about the truth and one day, when Sukumaran is already under heavy economical pressures, the police arrive and arrest him. The next day, because of the ill reputation caused by the family the house owner arranges people to drive Sukumaran’s family out of their rented house. At this point Mohanan comes to their rescue knowing about the situations where his brother has been led by the ill advice of his wife Kanchana. Mohanan arranges things to release his brother from jail. Finally the family is united where Kanchana understands her mistakes.

Madhavan (Sreenivasan) is trying to get a job for his unemployed friend Sethu (Mohanlal). When a spate of robberies takes place in a middle-class neighbourhood, Madhavan has Sethu pose as Raam Singh, a Nepali émigré, to fulfill the residents' need for a Gorkha security guard. After his retirement from Indian Railways, as station master, Raghavan Nair (Thilakan) is back at his home. His long cherished dream to spend his retired life along with his family consisting of wife (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), three sons and two daughters gets a blow after seeing his two sons brawling each other over their political differences. Prabhakaran (Sreenivasan), the elder one is a staunch leftist, and an active worker of the Revolutionary Democratic Party (RDP) which has just lost the Kerala state Assembly elections and relinquished office. Prakashan (Jayaram), popularly known as KRP, his younger brother is involved with the Indian National Secular Party (INSP) which has now come to power. Though they are both educated, neither has any plans to earn a living on their own and are fully immersed in petty politics, sponging off their parents for their needs. Raghavan Nair becomes deeply worried about their future, and tries to advise his sons, but of his admonitions fall on deaf ears. Anandan (Mala Aravindan), his son-in-law is a police sub-inspector but is now on suspension. When the RDP was in power, he arrested and beat up several of the opposition party workers on instruction from the ruling party officials. Now that the previous opposition is in power, they exact their revenge, first by transferring him repeatedly to stations as far away from civilisation as is possible, and then by suspending him. As part of his retired life, Raghavan Nair decides to focus his attention on his agricultural activities and meets the new young agricultural officer (Siddique) and, with his wife's approval, wants their younger daughter to get married to him, but his elder sons oppose it on flimsy and petty reasons. Prakashan, whose party is in power, pulls strings and get him transferred immediately to a remote location in order to prevent the marriage but Nair gets them married at the registrar's office. In the meantime, Anandan and his wife, Raghavan Nair's eldest daughter, demand partition of the property and their share, which Raghavan Nair objects to. The last straw is when their mother falls ill and is hospitalised for a day or so, and none of her children bother to show up at the hospital - in particular, the two older sons. Raghavan Nair, when he sees all of them milling around his house on returning from the hospital, loses his temper. He throws out all his children and orders them never to enter his house again. But to his surprise he finds both Prakasan and Prabhakaran at the gate, fully repented. He calls them in and they begin a new life. The film ends by showing Prabhakaran going to court as a lawyer and Prakashan for a job interview.

Bhaskaran(Sreenivasan), the local village goldsmith is in love with Snehalatha(Urvashi), the daughter of P.V.Panicker(Innocent), the local astrologer. They are neighbors. Snehalatha asks for a gold necklace made of 10 pavans (sovereigns) as a symbol of Bhaskaran's love. Bhaskaran makes a necklace and hands it over to Snehalatha. An angry Panicker (her father) finds this out, admonishes her and pockets the golden necklace. He reasons that it was "brotherly love" which made Bhaskaran give the necklace to his daughter.

Nadodikattu opens by introducing the two protagonists, Ramdas/Dasan (Mohanlal) and Vijayan (Sreenivasan), who are employed as ill-paid peons. A commerce graduate, and proud of that, Dasan frequently vents his frustration in having to serve lesser qualified superiors and having to settle with lesser than what he feels he deserves in life. Vijayan is his less educated roommate and sole friend. Their relationship is one full of tension, with Dasan adopting a superior stance on the account of his education and good looks, which fiercely rattles Vijayan. Several comic situations later in the film borrow from this aspect of their characters. Dasan frequently bosses over Vijayan to do all the household chores.

Radha Devi (Santhi Krishna) is an office assistant working in the city of Kozhikode. She is in love with the unemployed Sivan (Jayaram).
