Sreenivasan, Jayaram, Urvashi, Innocent, Parvathy and Shari plays the pivotal roles. The film was critically acclaimed and was a big commercial success. Late actor Krishnankutty Nair played the role of Thattan Gopalan (Sreenivasan's father) and once Sathyan Anthikkad referred to it as the most brilliant performances by any actor in his films.
Synopsis
Bhaskaran(Sreenivasan), the local village goldsmith is in love with Snehalatha(Urvashi), the daughter of P.V.Panicker(Innocent), the local astrologer. They are neighbors. Snehalatha asks for a gold necklace made of 10 pavans (sovereigns) as a symbol of Bhaskaran's love. Bhaskaran makes a necklace and hands it over to Snehalatha. An angry Panicker (her father) finds this out, admonishes her and pockets the golden necklace. He reasons that it was "brotherly love" which made Bhaskaran give the necklace to his daughter.Acteurs

Sukumaran, his brother Mohanan and their mother live contently in a middle-class family. Mohanan has recently married Shylaja who is employed unlike Sukumaran’s wife Kanchana. Sukumaran is a supervisor to a company named JK Constructions. Shylaja’s fortunate life with money and job makes Kanchana envious about her and Kanchana slowly starts causing problems in the family by finding unnecessary issues which affects the smooth going of a peaceful family life. Finally Sukumaran leaves their family house and starts living in a rented house as part of Kanchana’s requests. Soon Kanchana finds one or the other reasons to live in luxury which is not conducive with the economical conditions of Sukumaran who is just a supervisor in a company. However he leans for her demands like buying costly home appliances, arranging a dance master for their daughter, sending her to English medium school, buying an old car (which would be destroyed soon) etc. The huge economical demands slowly crush Sukumaran and it finally affects him in the manner of creditors demanding their money back. In order to meet the worst situations Sukumaran finally decides to cheat his employer by forgery. The authorities soon come to know about the truth and one day, when Sukumaran is already under heavy economical pressures, the police arrive and arrest him. The next day, because of the ill reputation caused by the family the house owner arranges people to drive Sukumaran’s family out of their rented house. At this point Mohanan comes to their rescue knowing about the situations where his brother has been led by the ill advice of his wife Kanchana. Mohanan arranges things to release his brother from jail. Finally the family is united where Kanchana understands her mistakes.

Ramanujan (Jayaram) meets a software engineer named Jyothi (Soundarya) on the train returning to Chennai. She has been engaged to Dr. Pradeep (Sidhique) for many years. After they arrive in Chennai, Ramanujan asks his best friend Paul (Innocent) to find Jyothi a new home. Jyothi is not married and is therefore unable to legally own a home, so when she receives a home from Paul she lies and tells the owner that she is married to Ramanujan. When she has to leave the home, she stays at Ramanujan's house. They convince the neighbors that they are a couple. Ramanujan falls in love with Jyothi, but he understands that she is already engaged. She returns to Kerala for her engagement, and Ramanujan and Paul both attend the engagement party. Paul gets drunk at the party and tells everyone that Ramanujan and Jyothi were living in a single home together in Chennai, ending Jyothi's relationship and forcing her to marry Ramanujan.

The movie starts with a loner named Ben Narendran (Mammootty) writing a suicide note. He mentions that he is committing suicide as he has nothing to do with his life. He chooses to jump in front of the train to perform the act. He waits for the train but end up saving another young man named Janardanan (Jayaram) who has the same intention. Janardanan has committed a murder out of desperation and is scared of revenge. Narendran consoles him and offers him to take the blame of the murder so that Janardanan can live freely.

After his retirement from Indian Railways, as station master, Raghavan Nair (Thilakan) is back at his home. His long cherished dream to spend his retired life along with his family consisting of wife (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), three sons and two daughters gets a blow after seeing his two sons brawling each other over their political differences. Prabhakaran (Sreenivasan), the elder one is a staunch leftist, and an active worker of the Revolutionary Democratic Party (RDP) which has just lost the Kerala state Assembly elections and relinquished office. Prakashan (Jayaram), popularly known as KRP, his younger brother is involved with the Indian National Secular Party (INSP) which has now come to power. Though they are both educated, neither has any plans to earn a living on their own and are fully immersed in petty politics, sponging off their parents for their needs. Raghavan Nair becomes deeply worried about their future, and tries to advise his sons, but of his admonitions fall on deaf ears. Anandan (Mala Aravindan), his son-in-law is a police sub-inspector but is now on suspension. When the RDP was in power, he arrested and beat up several of the opposition party workers on instruction from the ruling party officials. Now that the previous opposition is in power, they exact their revenge, first by transferring him repeatedly to stations as far away from civilisation as is possible, and then by suspending him. As part of his retired life, Raghavan Nair decides to focus his attention on his agricultural activities and meets the new young agricultural officer (Siddique) and, with his wife's approval, wants their younger daughter to get married to him, but his elder sons oppose it on flimsy and petty reasons. Prakashan, whose party is in power, pulls strings and get him transferred immediately to a remote location in order to prevent the marriage but Nair gets them married at the registrar's office. In the meantime, Anandan and his wife, Raghavan Nair's eldest daughter, demand partition of the property and their share, which Raghavan Nair objects to. The last straw is when their mother falls ill and is hospitalised for a day or so, and none of her children bother to show up at the hospital - in particular, the two older sons. Raghavan Nair, when he sees all of them milling around his house on returning from the hospital, loses his temper. He throws out all his children and orders them never to enter his house again. But to his surprise he finds both Prakasan and Prabhakaran at the gate, fully repented. He calls them in and they begin a new life. The film ends by showing Prabhakaran going to court as a lawyer and Prakashan for a job interview.
