Derby Day is a 1923 short silent comedy film directed by Robert F. McGowan. It was the 19th Our Gang short subject released.

Synopsis

As the gang are selling lemonade across the street from the racetrack, they meet up with Mary, who's rich father owns one of the horses. She gets them into the track, and they're sufficiently impressed to start up their own junior version.

Near West Coast Studios in Hollywood, the gang is waging a street war against a rival group of kids; their ammunition primarily consisting of old vegetables. The battle is halted when Mary is called to act in one of the West Coast films. The rest of the gang tries to crash the studio gates and get a role in the picture, but the casting director throws them out. Farina manages to sneak into the studio, however, prompting the other kids to sneak in after her. Several chases throughout the property then ensue and the gang eventually escapes - with a little help from Harold Lloyd.

The gang travels by wagon to go on a picnic with their families. After the cart loses a wheel, the parents replace it, only to be left behind when the horse bolts with the wagon and the gang. Arriving in the woods, the gang run wild until their parents catch up with them. A storm interrupts the picnic, after which the horse bolts again, this time leaving everybody behind.

A new family moves into town. Mickey immediately falls in love with the family's daughter, Mary, and tries whatever he can to gain her affections. He tries taking her for a ride on his goat-powered wagon, and later dresses up as a knight. In the interim, the village blacksmith, "Dad" Anderson (Richard Daniels), receives a lucrative contract to produce a creation of his: a sail-propelled scooter. The gang is lucky enough to get a hold of a few of these scooters, and happily sail down the city streets.
