Roy William Neill, de son vrai nom Roland de Gostrie, est un producteur de cinéma et réalisateur américain né le 4 septembre 1887 sur un bateau proche des côtes d'Irlande (son père était capitaine de vaisseau) et mort le 14 décembre 1946 à Londres en Angleterre (Royaume-Uni) à la suite d'une rupture d'anévrisme. Il utilisa parfois d'autres noms tels que R. William Neill ou Roy Neill.

Biographie

Roy William Neill entre dans l'industrie du film en 1915 comme assistant de Thomas H. Ince et un an plus tard en tant qu'acteur dans un coin dans Colleens (A corner in Colleens) dirigé par Charles Miller (1916). Par la suite, il prend plaisir à participer en tant qu'acteur à plus de 40 films muets en noir et blanc.

Il devient l'un des plus importants réalisateur au début des années 1930. Puis après quelques difficultés à Hollywood, il se rend en Angleterre en 1935 et passe trois années à travailler pour les studios Gainsborough et plus tard pour le national de Warner-Bros-First.

Neill revint aux États-Unis pendant la guerre. À partir de 1941, il travaille pour Universal, où il est remarqué pour son film policier à petit budget Les Yeux des bas-fonds (Eyes of the Underworld). Il se consacre ensuite à la réalisation des adaptations de Sherlock Holmes et notamment Sherlock Holmes et l'Arme secrète.

Il a réalisé plus de 100 films au cours de sa carrière.

Newspaper magnate Forbes Lombard (Frank Keenan) discovers that his daughter Lola (Clara Bow) is mixed up with a gang of gamblers. Reporter Scott Seldon (William Powell) pretends to be a felon and goes undercover to infiltrate the mob and get a news scoop. This curious picture is a cross between fantasy and science fiction (at least, the 1922 version of science fiction) and features Broadway actors Grant Mitchell and Margaret Irving in their motion picture debuts. Arthur Wyman (Mitchell) is the typical absent-minded scientist. He is in love with Mary Langdon (Irving), the daughter of his landlady (Gertrude Hillman). To help her out, he invents an alarm clock that does not tick (this being long before the days of electronic devices). Using the money he has earned writing an article, Wyman tries to put the finishing touches on a radio that will contact Mars. He falls asleep as he is tinkering with it and dreams that he has gotten in touch with the Martians. They give him a lot of valuable information—he learns a special way to make diamonds from coal, fashion gold from clay, and create steel that weighs "less than nothing." What he learns makes him fabulously wealthy—until, much to his disappointment, he wakes up. But then Mary arrives and tells him that the rights to the "tickless" alarm clock have been sold for a lot of money, so things work out after all.

As summarized in a film publication, Alice Lea (Binney), an heiress reaching the end of her funds, was being forced into a marriage for money, so she decided to seek adventure in Central American and visit a friend. She learned that Don Luis (Wilbur), husband of her friend, was hostile to the government and secretly planning to overthrow it. At the government ball Alice met Don Mariano, head of the army. During the ball she witnessed Mariano kill a spy and hated him for his cruelty. Later Alice is taken prisoner by Mariano on suspicion that she is aiding Don Luis in his revolt. Alice was made very comfortable in Don Mariano's home and, while she would not admit it, she was falling in love with her captor. Mariano was also falling in love with his captive, so much so that managed her release and also promised that of her friend's husband Don Luis, who had been captured and likely faced death. Alice returned to her home, and was soon followed by Mariano, who had been exiled for allowing the prisoners to escape. He told Alice of his love, and of course they lived happily thereafter.

Manquant d'expérience professionnelle, Mary Wayne a du mal à trouver un emploi. Quand son amie Nell Norcross, la secrétaire de Caroline Marshall, tombe malade, elle propose que Mary la remplace.
