Teja (Kalabhavan Mani) is a high-profile gangster in North Madras, who often imitates the behaviour characteristic of different animals for sarcastic effect. Accompanied by his gang, he arrives at a magistrate's court for a hearing. His animal antics are mocked at by "Chintai" Jeeva, another accused. Teja and his gang retaliate and kill Jeeva within the court premises. Jeeva was a member of a rival gang headed by Gemini (Vikram), an aspiring goon from Chintadripet who aspires to dethrone Teja and take his place. To avenge Jeeva's death, Gemini hunts down the murderer Pandian while Isaac, one of Gemini's men, kills him. This incident leads to a feud between Gemini and Teja, and a fight for supremacy ensues. Pandian's mother Annamma (Manorama), a destitute woman, locates the whereabouts of her son's murderers. She approaches Gemini, becomes the gang's cook and awaits a chance to poison them.

Riots and violence cause deaths and destruction in Mumbai city but the Chief Minister Balraj Chauhan (Amrish Puri) because of some political motive, does not take any preventive step. TV reporter Shivaji Rao (Anil Kapoor) in a telly interview of Chauhan publicly brings to light the CM's disregard towards the elimination of the recent violence and his total failure as a CM working for the growth and development of the state. Chauhan, just to stick up for his political image, says to Rao snapping his fingers, "Sirf ek din... sirf ek din ke liye CM bannke dikhaao", (Become the CM just for a day), something that later became a popular and theoretical political concept in India where edification in political and social arena is a crying need. Rao accepts Chauhan's challenge and emerges as an efficient CM wiping out various socio-economic problems of the state and dismissing the corrupt government employees. Rao's beloved is played by Rani Mukherjee.

Vers la domination britannique en Inde, un homme du nom de Senapathy décide de se rebeller contre les Britanniques. Senapathy apprend un art martial rare qui lui permet de tuer avec ses mains nues, et va à Singapour, pour rejoindre l'Armée de libération formée par le célèbre Subhas Chandra Bose. Il rejoint ensuite un escadron de la mort afin de détruire les chars britanniques. Bien que tous les autres aient accompli la mission, Senapathy est capturé, emprisonné, battu, torturé sans pitié par les Britanniques. À sa libération, il est pris en charge par une femme du nom de Namrata, qu'il a sauvé des Britanniques - qui s'étaient emparés de deux camions de manifestantes, ont brûlé leurs vêtements, les forçant à se suicider.
