Krishna Chandra Dey (Bengali: কৃষ্ণ চন্দ্র দে) (1893–1962), better known as K.C. Dey, was a Bengali actor, singer, music composer and teacher born in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was S.D. Burman's first musical teacher and mentor. In 1906, at the age of thirteen, he lost his eyesight and became completely blind. He worked for various theatre groups and finally went on to work for New Theatres in Kolkata until 1940. He is best remembered for his Kirtan songs. K.C. Dey recorded around 600 songs, mostly in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Gujurati and 8 Naats (Muslim religious songs).

Dey sang and composed music for movies from 1932 till 1946. He also acted in movies in the same period. Dey used to travel from Calcutta to Bombay (Mumbai) to take part in movies. In 1942 he moved to Bombay. Dey quit movies in 1946 after the quality of both his music and singing started going down. The blind singer died in Kolkata on November 28, 1962. Famous playback singer Manna Dey was his nephew.

Ramesh (P. Jairaj) is a straight-forward young man with a desire to help mankind. He works as an engineer in a mill, and is interested in inventive research. Half his income is spent on that, and the rest on the betterment of the villagers. Uma (Leela Desai), is a wealthy young girl and lives with her brother, who is a Professor. She can not avail of money entitled to her till she gets married. Uma and Ramesh meet when they share a taxi. They soon fall in love but Ramesh's ideals come in the way. Uma marries someone else in order to procure the money for Ramesh to fulfill his mission.

King Shiva Singha (Prithviraj Kapoor) and His queen Lakshmi (Chhaya Devi) invite the poet Vidyapati (Pahari Sanyal) to their palace. He arrives with his constant companion Anuradha (Kanan Devi). The queen finds herself getting attracted to Vidyapati’s poetry and falls in love with him. This causes great anguish to the king who in his distress abandons his responsibilities and turns to Anuradha. The troubled Queen decides to kill herself and when the Prime Minister gets to hear of it he encourages her as he feels that Vidyapati’s sensuous bold poetry has had a detrimental effect on the king. The king in the end sends for his queen through Anuradha. Standing near the statue of Shiva, the king and queen consume poison.

Ashok (K. L. Saigal) and Ajay (Jagdish Sethi) have different notions about the progress of the country. Ashok supports agriculture and going back to the villages while Ajay is in favour of industrialisation and technology. Ajay is from a rich family and has to go to UK for further studies in engineering. He asks Ashok to come with him. Ashok refuses and decides to go the village and help the farmers. Ajay’s sister Pratibha (Kamlesh Kumari) is in love with Ashok who is unaware of her feelings. When Ashok faces hardships in the village she secretly assists him by sending money to buy new machinery for the farm. Ashok and his colleague are frustrated in their attempts several times by Chowdhary, the village headman. Ashok meets and falls in love with a village girl Gauri (Uma Shashi) who stays with her blind father (K. C. Dey). Ajay returns from abroad and is told of a rich coal mine. This is located under Ashok’s field. Ajay forgoes mining the land and decides to buy the land that Ashok has been farming to safeguard it for him. Ashok tells Ajay his plans of marrying Gauri. Ajay is stunned and upset for his sister. For the farmers there is distress when the monsoons fail. They face a drought situation. This is when Ajay decides to mine the field for coal. However the disagreements are sorted out and Ajay helps out with new ideas and approves Ashok’s method of co-operative farming.

Au tournant du XX siècle au Bengale, Devdas (K.L. Saigal) est un jeune homme insouciant d'une vingtaine d'années qui fréquente Parvati (Jamuna), une jeune fille de son village qu'il connait depuis qu'ils ont fréquenté ensemble les bancs de l'école. Elle est amoureuse de lui et voudrait bien l'épouser, mais lui laisse planer le doute. Un jour, le père de Devdas, un riche propriétaire terrien, décide de l'envoyer à Calcutta poursuivre ses études. Il essaye de résister mais la pression familiale est trop forte et, à contre-cœur, il doit quitter son village et Parvati. À Calcutta chez son oncle, il fait la connaissance de Chunilal (A.H. Shore), un agent d'assurance filou et bon-vivant qui tente de transformer le jeune villageois timide en citadin à la mode.

Jibanananda (K. L. Saigal) a selfish young criminally-minded man marries the rich Alaknanda (Chandra) for her money. With her help he changes and starts loving her. But his criminal activities catch up with him and he has to escape from the police leaving his wife behind. Several years pass and he returns as a rich aristocrat. The Pujarin (priestess) of the local temple who unknown to Jibananda is his wife, and he get into a conflict with each other as she does not approve of his high-handed ways with the local people. He realises who the priestess is and reforms his ways, finally uniting with his wife.

After several years of penance and prayers a male child is born to King Silwan of Sialkot and his wife Queen Ichhara. However the Raj Guru predicts that they must not see their son till he’s 16 years old or the child will die. The child, Puran, is given to Raj Guru to be fostered. Mahipat the Senapati (King’s General), has looked forward to becoming the king for a long time as the king had no son. But the birth of Puran thwarts his desires and over the years he spreads rumours about Puran’s wild antics, which also reach the king. Time comes for Puran to return home. He finds his father has taken a much younger wife, Luna.

Malti (Sabita Devi) is the daughter of a wealthy mill-owner Jagmohandas (Asooji), who is an evil, corrupt man. She meets a young man Vinod (Jal Merchant) in College. They both fall in love and decide to get married. However, Vinod's father is humiliated by Jagmohandas and he commits suicide. An angry Vinod decides to take revenge by marrying Malti and putting her through mental and physical abuse. An old friend of Malti's, Sudhakar (Balaram), loves her from college days and watches the treatment Malti suffers through her husband but is unable to do anything. Vinod takes to drinking and bringing nautch girls home. Malti suggests Sudhakar get married to Nalini (Swaroop Rani) who is ultra-mod but Malti tries to help her turn traditional.
