Master Sergeant Joe Lawrence (Richard Widmark) is stationed in Berlin shortly after the end of World War II where he falls in love with Maria (Mai Zetterling), a refugee.
Dayashankar (Amrish Puri) is a wealthy NRI living in London. His daughter Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) is the apple of his eye and his life revolves around her and his wife Parvati (Reema Lagoo). Dayashankar also takes care of his deceased friend's son Amar (Saif Ali Khan). Amar and Pooja have grown up with each other and he has fallen in love with her over time. Studying in Edinburgh, he is overjoyed when he is called to come stay with the family in London. He eagerly prepares for his meeting with Pooja and plans to ask her father for her hand in marriage.

Lord Beaverbrook, head of the UK Ministry of Aircraft Production also arranged for purchase of aircraft from manufacturers in the United States. Aircraft were first transported to Dorval Airport near Montreal, and then flown to RCAF Station Gander in Newfoundland for the transatlantic flight. In the early 1920s in Kansas, Eli is a barnstorming stunt pilot, whose wife was killed in an airplane crash. He and his 11-year-old son, Rodger set off to fly around the country on a series of adventures. Wherever he lands Eli finds a new girlfriend, but likes one in particular, Shelby. He, however, does not form any permanent relationships. Rodger, who misses his deceased mother, continually helps out his father, even paying a prostitute (Allison). When Shelby leaves Eli, Rodger is saddened.
When the United States enters World War I, Nancy Adams (Elizabeth Allen) becomes a Red Cross nurse, while her fiancé, Rex "Rocky" Thorne (Richard Dix), registered as a conscientious objector, pursues his sculpting career. She mocks his pacifism and accuses him of cowardice. Thorne, in retaliation for her rejection and determined to prove his bravery, enlists and trains to become a fighter pilot. As part of the American Expeditionary Forces, he is, at first, a hesitant combat pilot until he encounters his first enemy aircraft and shoots it down. Renouncing his past, Thorne becomes completely committed to the war in the air, vowing to become the "ace-of-aces".

Flying students Danny Collins (Johnny Downs), "Jinx" Roberts (Bobby Jordan), "Scrapper" McKay (Ward Wood) and "Zombie" Parker (William Benedict) are suspected of a series of murders perpetrated by engineer, Arthur Galt (Robert Armstrong) operating as a Nazi agent known as the Black Hangman. He has disposed of several people who accompanied him on an expedition which located lost helium deposits in Africa.

Policeman Jon Davis (Richard Arlen) informs "Foxy" Pattis (Chester Morris) at his shooting gallery, that his criminal father has died. Foxy blames all policemen, feeling they harassed him all his life and were responsible for his death. Both men enlist in the United States Army Air Forces where Foxy becomes the instructor at an aerial gunnery school. He makes life miserable for Jon, now a "Flying Sergeant" student, trying to force the former policeman to resign.
