William Benedict (April 16, 1917 – November 25, 1999) was an American actor, perhaps best known for playing "Whitey" in Monogram Pictures' The Bowery Boys series.
Born in Haskell, Oklahoma, he took part in school theatricals, and on leaving school he made his way to Hollywood. His first film was $10 Raise (1935) starring Edward Everett Horton, which launched Benedict on a busy career. The blond-haired Benedict almost always played juvenile roles, such as newsboys, messengers, office boys, and farmhands.
In 1939, when Universal Pictures began its Little Tough Guys series to compete with the popular Dead End Kids features, Billy Benedict was recruited into the cast. These films led him into the similar East Side Kids movies (usually playing a member of the East Side gang, but occasionally in villainous roles). The East Side Kids became The Bowery Boys in 1946, and Benedict stayed with the series (as "Whitey") through the end of 1951.
Other films included Way Down East (1935), My Little Chickadee (1940) starring W. C. Fields and Mae West, The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster (1955), The Hallelujah Trail (1965), Big Daddy (1969), The Sting (1973), Homebodies (1974), Farewell, My Lovely (1975), Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976), Sherlock Holmes in New York (1976) and Born Again (1978). Benedict never shook his juvenile image completely, and continued to play messengers and news vendors well into his sixties. He also worked often in television commercials.

19-22 mars 1901 - Londres : Sherlock Holmes arrive chez le Professeur Moriarty, un homme redoutable à la tête du crime organisé londonien. Le détective annonce à son ennemi qu'il a infiltré son organisation criminelle et que tous ses proches collaborateurs ont été arrêtés. Moriarty menace Holmes, mais se retient de le tuer. L'homme machiavélique annonce qu'il va perpétrer en représailles le « crime du siècle », qui se déroulera sous les yeux du détective sans que celui-ci ne parvienne à l'arrêter, ce qui l'humiliera et le discréditera aux yeux du public. De retour au 221B Baker Street trois jours plus tard, Watson informe Holmes qu'Irène Adler, devenue chanteuse de music hall à New York, va prochainement donner un récital. Holmes reçoit anonymement par la poste des tickets pour le spectacle, et s'inquiète qu'un lien existe entre les mauvaises intentions de Moriarty et Irène Adler : il décide donc de partir à New York avec Watson.

Louie is owed money by a stable-owner and sends Slip and the boys over to collect the debt. They return with a horse, My Girl, as payment. Local gangsters want the horse and switch their horse, Tarzana, for the gang's horse. They boys discover the ruse and the horses are switched several more times. In the end, Sach rides the real My Girl in a horse race, beating Tarzana and the gangsters.

After Slip discovers a spiritualist in the neighborhood, he enlists the boys to investigate. They discover that she is a fake and working for Margo the Medium, a radio star who has convinced Sach and Whitey that ghosts exist. They go to her place using Louie as a decoy. While she is busy trying to connect to Louie's dead uncle, the rest of the boys investigate the house. A real ghost, Edgar, befriends Sach and helps him investigate as well. Although the others cannot see Edgar, he does help them in times of crisis and helps them uncover Margo's scam.

A local charity has raised sixteen hundred dollars and entrusted the boys with it. They are then robbed of the cash by two men dressed as sailors. Believing them to be real sailors, and in order to catch them, they enlist in the Navy under fake names. They spend a year at sea, but cannot locate the thieves. However, Sach is able to win two thousand dollars gambling and the boys return to the Bowery. It is there that they are robbed by the same two men, but with the Navy captain helping, they are able to capture the crooks. They return to the navy office to receive their commendations, but are mistakenly re-enlisted!
