Arizona, 1908. Cable Hogue, un prospecteur malchanceux, est abandonné lâchement dans le désert par ses deux partenaires sans scrupules, Taggart et Bowen. Cable Hogue semble condamné à une mort certaine. Après quatre jours de marche et de prières, il découvre un point d'eau in extremis, à l'instant même où il s'apprêtait à rendre l'âme. Réalisant peu après qu'un circuit de diligence passe à proximité et que cette source est la seule dans les environs, Cable décide de s'installer un relai et de faire payer la consommation d'eau aux voyageurs assoiffés. Judicieusement conseillé par son deuxième client, un prédicateur aux méthodes peu recommandables, Cable développe peu à peu son affaire. Au cours d'une de ses visites en ville, il fait la connaissance d'une jolie prostituée, Hildy, dont il s'éprend rapidement.

Captain Steve Bannerman (Lloyd Bridges) has been asked to fly one last passenger flight from Hawaii to Australia for Trans-Pacific Airline. During a violent electrical storm, he crashes the jet airliner on an uninhabited South Pacific island. Bannerman takes charge of the survivors and teams with Merle Barnaby (Billy Dee Williams), a black marine returning from combat duty in Vietnam, to try to find a way to survive on the island. Among the surviving passengers and crew, they have the support of Gina Talbot (Anne Francis) and Beejay Caldwell (Jennifer Leak) but oil magnate Glenn Walkup (Ralph Meeker), nightclub entertainer Eddie Randolph (Bobby Van) and Jonesy (Andrew Prine) begin to cause trouble.

The plot revolves about the rivalry between a female gang (the Alleycats led by Mako) and the men of the Eagle gang run by Baron. When a member of the Alleycats turns down an advance from one of the Eagles (Susumu) in favor of her half-black boyfriend, the Eagle leader Baron, whose sister had been raped by a mixed-race individual, moves to rid the town of its racially mixed population. More problems ensue when a mixed-race stranger (Kazuma) finds favor with the Alleycats' leader Mako. The questions of race relations and nationality were especially pertinent since the film was shot near the U. S. Naval base at Yokosuka.
