The film was produced by Rajam Balachander and Pushpa Kandasamy under Kavithalaya Productions. The film features Kamal Haasan and Seetha in the lead roles with Gemini Ganesan, Manorama, Janagaraj, Naasar and Delhi Ganesh playing supporting roles. The film is a remake of the Telugu film Rudraveena. The soundtrack album and background score were composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Cinematography was handled by Raghunath Reddy and editing was done by R. Bhaskaran.
The film's plot revolves around clash of ideologies between father and son; the father believes in art while his son is interested in social service. The rest of the film revolves around how the father changes his opinion about his son. The film was released on 12 August 1988.
Synopsis
Udhayamoorthy (Kamal Haasan) is the younger son of an illustrious Carnatic music maestro, Bilahari Marthandam Pillai (Gemini Ganesan). The father is a strict disciplinarian who is very class conscious and cares only for his art. The maestro's elder son (Prasad Babu) is born mute and hence had to take to an instrument, the nadhaswaram, which he is quite adept at.Acteurs

Sethu, an orphan is a patient who is constantly playing pranks on the other hospital patients, the nurse in-charge and the doctors. A romantic bond develops between a young doctor, Indra and another patient, a football player, Arun much to the chagrin of her father, the senior most doctor in the hospital. The football player has a greedy brother who tries to arrange for his sibling to be killed. How Sethu, on learning that he is terminally ill cherishes the short time he has to live and takes it upon himself to unite the lovers forms the rest of the story.

Sethu (Kamal Haasan) and Ranjani (Rekha) arrive at a cliff where they plan to commit suicide due to the pressure put up by Ranjani's parents against their marriage. Sethu who is the son of an ordinary drunkard cook (Delhi Ganesh) and is also a dancer is not accepted as groom for Ranjani by her parents. The parents threaten Ranjani that either they would kill Sethu or commit suicide. While jumping from the cliff Sethu accidentally gets trapped in a tree and escapes but Ranjani dies. Despite the attempts made by Ranjani's father to jail Sethu by framing a fault case that Sethu killed Ranjani, no strong evidence was there to prove it. He is jailed for the offence of attempted suicide for one year.
