Udhayakumaran aka Udhaya(Vijay) is a college student who is doing research on atomic physics. Soon he is selected to study at Cambridge University due to the papers he has submitted on his research. However he declines and his teacher gives him the job of another teacher who is on leave. There he meets a student Vasanthi (Simran) and soon they fall in love. But later on he comes to know that she is engaged to be married. As he can't see his lover married off to someone else he moves to Chennai and finds a job as a reporter at a magazine with the help of Basheer (Vivek). He tries to fight for social change during which Basheer gets killed. He unknowingly gets to know a group of unsavoury characters who introduce him to their boss Dhananjay Veeran(Nassar) who poses as a person fighting for the people. They all promise to help him in his goals. Dhananjay asks Udhaya for a weapon to help break the granite rocks to save labour. Udhaya gives him a bomb that he had discovered during his research. However Dhananjay had other plans and uses it to cause a train to explode thereby killing many people. They frame him up. That night Udhaya is arrested by the police (Thalaivasal Vijay) and is accused of the bomb blast for which he was not responsible. Udhayakumar tries to fight his way out but in vain. In the process his father Muthuswamypillai(Rajesh) dies of heart attack on seeing his son in jail, himself being a retired constable. When Udhaya comes to his village to see his dead father Vasanthi tells him that his boss is not helping at all. While they are returning, the police jeep gets stuck in mud. So Udhaya, finding an opportunity, then cuts his handcuffs using one of the guns left behind by the police. He then sees Dhananjay Veeran and Niranjan discussing a plot to bomb a school bus and realises that Dhananjay is behind all this. He goes to the spot where one bus catches fire and Udhaya saves the children. Dhananjay arrives and seeing Udhaya attempts to shoot him but Udhaya stops him. Udhaya beats him up and throws him into the burning bus. The police arrests Udhaya despite the children's protests to not arrest him. He is taken to court where he is proven to not be guilty and is released. The film ends with Udhaya embracing Vasanthi.

Guru (Prabhu Deva) is a graduate but cannot find a job because employers are looking experience. Mammootty is a sincere district collector. A female leader of a major political party is kidnapped by a terrorist Veeraiyan(Nassar) and he promises to return her back if his injured brother Arasappan (Napoleon) is treated well and brought back safely. The government agrees to this condition and asks Mammootty to look after Arasappan. At first;Arasappan hates Mammootty and his family as Mammootty works for the government against whom his brother's group is rebelling. But;the kindness shown by Mammootty's wife and mother change his attitude. Just when he was about to turn over a new leaf; a bad thing occurs. The police team;without taking the necessary orders from Mammootty go to the forest and attack Veeraiyan's gathering. This angers Arasappan;but he was restrained by Mammootty. Now;the police accuse Mammootty of having links with the terrorists as Arasappan ran away from his house and Mammootty condemned the police action. Hence;they arrest Mammootty's wife and mother. (Mammootty ran away to find Arasappan) Hearing this sad news; Arasappan himself surrenders to the police as he did not want them to suffer for him. But the police do not spare him despite his surrender.

Ganesan (Prabhu Deva) has the job of collecting travellers for the lone bus run by Padmavathi Bus Service. His high-energy people-gathering tactics are considered the reason for the crowds on the bus and he earns commission for the same from the owner (Nasser) of the bus service. Ganesan is pursued by Saroja (Roja) who dreams of wedding him though receiving no response from him. Kannan (Prashanth), a young music shop employee dreams of his dreamgirl with gold anklets. He sees a running girl's leg and finds he has found his girl and follows her with his anklets. Kannan goes to a music college to repair musical instruments and a group of college girls led by Gayatri (Simran) the girl which Kannan found as his dreamgirl approach him to request him to not to repair the instruments all they are very old and unfit to use for the music contest. On the day of the contest Gayathri and her team are shocked that the song which they have composed was stolen by other troop and she misunderstands that Kannan has stolen and sold their work for money despite Kannan's protest that he is innocent. Kannan lends the love poems which he had written for her to sing for the contest. Gayathri gets the song and sings which wins her the prize. Gayathri understands that Kannan has no role in the stealing of the song and he got money from the troop for fixing their repaired musical instruments. Gayathri now realised her blunder for hurting him and rushes to apologize and accept his love. Kannan gets news that his father was injured and rushes to his home.

Chitra Narayan (Simran), a political journalist with Observer Daily in Delhi, is in love with Kiran Verma (Akshay Anand), a budding actor. She intrudes into the illegal affairs of Paul B. Issac (Devan), a Delhi-based politician. Paul B. Issac commits a murder and gets actor Kiran's face morphed onto his body in the video, whereby he traps him for the crime. Kiran is jailed under the charge of murder. Chitra gets the video tape, and she smells foul and tries to reveal the truth behind the morphing of images. She is followed by the goons of Paul. Chitra reaches Banglore, but the goons reach there after her. She is saved by Sathish Menon (Mammootty), a computer expert. He becomes her savior. After watching the video, Satish realizes the truth behind the crime and decides to expose Paul B. Issac. Meanwhile, Kiran is killed. Satish's software company suffers huge setbacks, after the illegal influence of Paul, causing huge losses. Satish openly begins his battle for justice for Chitra.

Vellaichaamy (Vijayakanth) thinks the world of his three brothers, even giving up marriage when he learns that the woman he loves plans to send them to a hostel after the wedding. The brothers live with their grandmother (S. N. Lakshmi). He works hard to raise them and they too reciprocate his love and affection. The eldest of the three, Muthu (Vijayakanth again), is a cook in a small hotel, When Vellachamy learns that Muthu is in love with his childhood playmate (Meena) he goes to the city to his friend (Rajiv) with the marriage proposal. Only to be insulted! Circumstances bring Muthu to the city, to the girl's palatial bungalow where he works as a cook. The girl is arrogant and rude till she realises that Muthu is her childhood pal. Surya (Ajith) has been brought up in the army barracks in Ooty, ever since his mother(Sukanya) handed him over as a baby to a brigadier (Nasser). She tells the officer the reason for her action but the audience is not allowed to hear it at this point. Surya grows up to be a patriotic youth and the best soldier in his class. He falls in love with Indu (Simran), the daughter of an army officer. Indu's parents accept her choice of husband but soon after, her father dies in a bomb blast while her mother loses her life on seeing her husband's body. Not wishing to lose her husband too in war, Indu asks Surya to choose between her and the army.
