The Race is a 1916 American drama silent film directed by George Melford and written by Hector Turnbull and Clinton Stagg. The film stars Victor Moore, Anita King, Ronald Bradbury, William Dale, Mrs. Lewis McCord and Ernest Joy. The film was released on April 6, 1916, by Paramount Pictures.

Synopsis

Although the film was advertised as being based on Anita King's real cross country trip in a roadster, the film actually follows the adventures of a man (Victor Moore) trying to win money in a transcontinental car race to pay back debt he owes. He eventually realizes that Grace (Anita King) needs money for her father and intentionally lets her win. The man gets money from an engine patent in the end anyway and that covers what he owes.

An orphan named Margery (Blanche Sweet) is working a dressmaking company in New York. She is sent to prison when a rich kleptomaniac named Helen North (Cleo Ridgely) puts some stolen lace in Margery's handbag. After leaving the prison she becomes a nurse for some time until the hospital she works at finds out she has a record. She leaves and becomes a nurse at a Red Cross emergency hospital in Belgium. At the same time, Helen has come to Belgium to take care of her sick father. After he dies, she is left without any money. She is planning to leave for California to live with her father's wealthy friend when an airship bomb sends Helen to the hospital Margery is working at. Another shell explodes and makes Margery think Helen is dead. Margery takes Helen's identity to go to California. She falls in love with a doctor named Richard Carlton (House Peters, Sr.) and right before they are supposed to get married Helen shows up. In order to stop people from taking Helen to the insane asylum, Margery confesses the truth. Carlton still wants to marry her anyway.

As described in a film magazine, Sheila Hepburn (Loomis), the half-sister of Alan Hepburn (Holt), is the daughter of a Japanese mother. While visiting Alan, who works in Tokyo, she attends a festival with her Japanese maid while wearing a Japanese kimono. There she meets the wealthy Arai Takada (Hayakawa), who is taken by the mysterious woman. Alan has dishonored and betrayed O'Mitsu (Aoki), and her brother Arai plans a terrible revenge. Alan looses heavily at cards to Arai and, to forget his losses, accompanies Arai to his country home. There Alan is about to be thrust into a pool of quicksand to die when Sheila appears, having been warned of Arai's plans. Dismayed that the woman he met at the festival is Alan's sister, Arai sees that she and Alan do not meet, but later agrees to release her brother as Sheila wins Arai's love and respect. At that moment Alan appears, having escaped from his prison, and strikes Arai down. Sheila bursts into tears and runs to the fallen man, and Alan, seeing his sister responding to the "call of the east," departs.

En Chine, une jeune femme du nom de Ming Toy, est proche d'être vendue par son père aux enchères quand Billy Benson, un jeune et élégant américain, arrivant de son pays natal dans l'espoir de trouver une chinoise à marier, surenchérit et la sauve de l'esclavage. Un de ses vieux amis, Lo Sang Kee, l’emmène à San Francisco mais finit par la vendre à Charlie Yong, le roi de Chinatown qui souhaite prendre Ming Toy pour femme. Devant le refus de la jeune femme, Benson, malgré plusieurs essais infructueux, réussit à l'enlever de force et décide alors de la prendre chez lui. Mais ses parents, horrifiés à la pensée de voir leur fils amoureux épouser une chinoise, la rejettent. Croyant qu'elle est marquée à vie par le fait d'être une orientale, Ming Toy pense qu'elle devra passer une vie de souffrance. Cependant, elle découvre qu'elle est bien une femme blanche et qu'elle a été élevée par une famille chinoise lorsque ses parents, un couple de missionnaires, furent assassinés, expliquant alors sa proximité avec la culture et les mœurs chinois dont elle est imprégnés. Apprenant cela, Charlie Yong se détourne d'elle et les parents de Benson décident alors de bénir leur union.
