Ponmanam is a 1998 Tamil language drama film directed by debutant S. P. Rajkumar, assistant of K. S. Ravikumar. The film features Prabhu, Suvalakshmi and Priya Raman in lead roles. The film produced by V. Natarajan, had musical score by S. A. Rajkumar, was released on 14 January 1998 coinciding with Thai Pongal to positive reviews.

Synopsis

Anandhan (Prabhu), a kind-hearted singer, has a wife Maheshwari (Suvalakshmi) and a baby boy. He lives in a house leased by Naidu (Manivannan). Kumar (Karan), a youth who supposed to work in a bank, moves into a new house near Anandhan's house. Poornima (Priya Raman), a middle-class family woman, quarrels with Anandhan many times.

Rishi (Karthik) sleeps around through the efforts of a sophisticated, dedicated and ‘immigration officer’ look alike pimp (‘Thailaivasal’ Vijay). His DAD (Manivannan) whom Rishi considers to be his ‘friend’ voices his concern in a friendly way about Rishi’s life style and suggests him to try falling in love instead of spending all his hard earned money on call girls. Rishi brushes him off asking him to only worry about his earnings and that he would take of care of the expenditure.

The film opens with Arasu (Sarath Kumar) murdering a person in Mumbai. Later the story shifts to Kumbakonam where he is an assistant to a temple priest (Delhi Ganesh). Soon the priest’s daughter Meera (Simran) falls in love with Arasu. At the stroke of interval Arasu sheds his mask and murders a rowdy who is out from jail and this shocks everybody. Then in a flashback he tells that his father (Sarath Kumar) believes in taking law into his hands and thus had lot of enemies. When he confronts a bad guy (Sai Kumar) and humiliates him, the villains later kills Arasu’s father. The rest of the story is how Arasu takes revenge.

Sundarapandian (Anandaraj), an orphan and angry man, is the henchman of a rich man Manivannan (Manivannan) and he often went to jail for minor offenses. Karthikeyan (Ramkumar) enters his house as a maid and he falls with his daughter Kalyani (Saradha Preetha). In the meantime, Mallaria (Kasthuri), an orphan, tries to reform Sundarapandian and they fall in love with each other. One day, a poor girl Chellayi (Ragasudha) is raped and killed by a corrupted MLA (Vasu Vikram). Sundarapandian and Mallaria finally get married, they decide to leave the village but they don't have enough money. Manivannan prepares his daughter's wedding with the MLA and Manivannan orders Sundarapandian to kill the innocent Karthikeyan. Sundarapandian, who is now a good man, decide to join the young pair. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Kavita and Anita pressure him to see the photo of their mother Amudha, he describes the girl of his dreams to his friend Sabapathy (Dhamu) who then paints her portrait and Shanmugam shows them the portrait. By chance, the children see Priya (Meena), who looks like the woman in the portrait. Shanmugam, Kavita and Anita go to her home in the city.
