The film represents the style of pure escapism with its mansion settings filled with romances, wrong identities and centuries-old secrets. It was the most watched Finnish premiere film of 1945 and went on to win three Jussi Awards; Rauli Tuomi for best actor in a leading role, Eino Heino for best cinematography and Roy for best production design.

The story begins in the year 1860. The young Count of Munkkiniemi, Mauritz Armborg, and Katariina, the daughter of a farmhand on the estate of the Count's family, are attracted to each other. However, the count's grandmother, Yvonne Armborg, objects to the romance and tries to obstruct it. Elias Jahnukainen, a fisherman, is himself in love with Katariina and wants to marry her, but she has demurred at his marriage proposals to date. Count Mauritz dreams of making a career as a violinist and wants to study music abroad. To try to divert Katariina away from her grandson, Countess Yvonne offers to finance Katariina's dowry if she is willing to marry Elias. In addition, Countess Yvonne introduces the young count to Ingeborg Liliecrona. However, Mauritz is not attracted to Ingeborg.

L'action se situe dans un espace unique tout le long du film, un salon d'un appartement pourvu d'un couloir en arrière-plan et d'une porte d'entrée à gauche. The plot is linked with the previous film Bhoothnath. When Bhoothnath, although his real name in the two films is Kailash Nath, (Amitabh Bachchan) enters the Bhoothworld, (a ghosts' world) he is mocked and questioned about his abilities as a ghost as he was unsuccessful to scare any child. To redeem himself, he returns to Earth where he tries his best to scare children but is unsuccessful with his attempts. However, a boy named Akhrot (Parth Bhalerao) can see him in his true form. Akhrot is not scared of Bhoothnath, but helps him to scare a few children. In return, he asks Bhoothnath to act scared of him and to run away from a haunted house while he chants mantras in front of his friends, so that his friends can accept him in their cricket team. Bhoothnath decides to help him further by helping him earn money by giving ghosts living in under-construction high rises peace by fulfilling the wishes they were still staying back on Earth as ghosts for. In the process, they come to know why the ghosts died, and help their families get insurance money by scaring corrupt insurance officers. In the process, he gets to know about Bhau (Boman Irani), a former criminal who is now a corrupt politician. After having seen the amount of corruption in India and encouraged by Akhrot, Bhoothnath decides to contest the upcoming elections. Soon, the rivalry between Bhoothnath and Bhau heats up, to the extent that Bhoothnath sacrifices his powers to win. One day before the elections, a rally is to be held by Bhoothnath to encourage a high turnout on election day. Bhau's men threaten to kill Akhrot unless he prevents the rally from happening, but Akhrot refuses and is ready to face the consequences. On the day of the rally, Bhau's men injure Akhrot grievously for his non-compliance, which makes Bhoothnath leave his rally to be with Akhrot in the hospital. He goes to the Bhoothworld and begs for Akhrot's life. They tell him that if Bhoothnath wins the election, they will spare Akhrot's life. Meanwhile, Bhau uses Bhoothnath's absence at the rally to his advantage and tries to influence the audience to vote for him. However, on election day, the majority of the public voted for Bhoothnath. The next day, Bhootnath sees Akhrot's heartbeat rising and realises that he won the election. The film ends with Akhrot regaining consciousness and everybody celebrating the success of Bhoothnath.

Genjuro est un potier qui vit dans un petit village de campagne, Ōmi, au XVI siècle. Un jour, il part vendre ses pots à la ville en compagnie de Tobei. Quand Genjuro revient à Ōmi, il a gagné beaucoup d'argent car la guerre avec l'armée Shibata fait monter les prix. Tobei, quant à lui, s'est engagé avec des samouraïs, mais il rentrera bien vite chez lui, humilié par de vrais guerriers. Genjuro veut augmenter sa productivité pour gagner encore plus d'argent. Il part pour la ville avec Tobei et la femme de celui-ci. En ville, Genjuro tombe amoureux de dame Wakasa, Tobei devient un vrai samouraï grâce à l'argent de la vente qu'il a volé, et la femme de Tobei devient prostituée après avoir été violée en le poursuivant. Cependant, un prêtre dit à Genjuro que la femme qu'il aime est en fait un fantôme, et que son âme est manipulée par des esprits malfaisants ; il rentre alors au village. Tobeï et sa femme se rencontrent par hasard ; Tobei abandonne son métier de samouraï et rentre lui aussi au village avec sa femme. Mais la femme de Genjuro, Miyagi, est morte entre-temps en voulant retourner au village. Quant à ce dernier, il ne lui reste que son fils.
